Blue Heron Rookery
« on: April 03, 2020, 10:07:06 pm »

There's a colony of Great Blue Herons here in Minneapolis.  Right now they're building nests. More photos in my blog post:

Magnificent bird, almost prehistoric. It's an excellent shot, framing is very well chosen…
Bravo.

A typical BIF shot, autofocus was pretty successful, I'd say the sharpness is 95% of what it could have been - but I miss that last 5%.    Even with a 600mm lens and APS-C sensor, this image is only 1/4 of the frame.  The rookery is quite a photo-op though, and I'll be going back soon.

As another wildlife photographer and one who adores GBH's, I cannot say I like the blown background nor the loss of detail in the wing feathers. When I am shooting upward on a bird, I almost always add .07EV which provides that detail and better color contrast on both the bird and the sky.
