ICC profile not listed
« on: March 15, 2020, 10:05:21 am »

On Win 10--I installed an ICC profile as usual but it is not listed in either PS or LR. I checked the C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color folder and it's there. Rebooting made no difference. Ideas?

A couple quick thoughts -

Does PS or LR see your other profiles in that folder ?

If so, then it might be a file permissions issue. Copy/moving from user rather than admin for example.

Did you copy a shortcut instead of the profile file ?

If they don't see other profiles, then where do they look ?

Do you have to “import” the profile into PS ?

And the obvious one: have you closed and reopened Lr and Ps?

I would download it again in case it got corrupted somehow.  Did you do anything to it (eg rename it?) before copying it to folder?

Do you have a really large number of profiles? Sometime back I noticed PS stopped loading all the profiles once there were a large enough number. I had to remove a bunch of older ones to get the count below about 1000  or so.

Note that the name of the profile listed in PS or LR does not necessarily coincide with the file name you see in Windows explorer. If you cannot find anything that sounds familiar, try to open the icc file with an application such as WordPad and find the string "desc". Next to "desc" you will find the name that should be listed in PS or LR

^ Excellent point. This can be quite confusing when first encountered. OEM profiles commonly have different file names than description names which are embedded in the profile. There is a tool called ProfileExplorer that can be downloaded from www.color.org that lets you examine the internal structure of profiles including the "Desc" field.

Thanks everyone. I tried everything you suggested, still no soap. I'll keep looking into it.

Are you sure it is a RGB profile? PS will show CMYK profiles but not everywyere. Can you share the profile (if it is not proprietary) to see If some of us can check and/or replicate the issue?

Same with Mac because ICC profiles have an internal name that software sees and external names we see in the Finder/Explorer. But anyone who has a clue about creating profiles will make the two the same name.

So locate other profiles you see in LR/PS, copy the profiles in question into the identical location. Better?

"PS will show CMYK profiles but not everywhere"

What?

Sorry if did not explain myself well. For instance, in the print dialogue when you choose "photoshop manages color", it will only show RGB profiles (at least with some printer drivers)
