Done with OWC
« on: March 06, 2020, 06:43:09 pm »

Here is a sad story...

- New Mac pro arrived, perfectly stable for a week,
- Installation of OWC PCIe SSD card -> 1 crash a day
- Removal of OWC PCIe card -> back to perfectly stable

Now that I remember it,  very few of the OWC products I have bought have been performing reliably.

- the replacement SSD of my mac pro 2013 caused it to crash every 30 mins under Catalina
- my Thunderbolt 2 dock was super unstable
- an external disk had major connectivity issues
- ...

Support has been very inconsistent also.

I am done with the brand.

Cheers,
Bernard

Hi Bernard

Just curious where did you get your RAM? I am waiting for the 16gb video card before making a decision.

Thanks Steven

As crazy as it may seem, I bought my RAM from Apple.

Thanks Bernard. I am leaning that way as well. How much did you get?

I think if you use RAM from OWC it could be better not to mix it with Apples RAM...
The memory makers often state that you better use a complete tested package, instead of combining two...
Even from their own factory.

All the things i have bought from OWC in worked and still work fine BTW

I confirm the perfect stability of the mac pro after removal of the OWC PCIe SSD.

That thing is a disaster.

Bernard

Strange , it would be the most simple thing to find out; maybe it did work before an updated OSX.

I know, i was talking about 15.2 to 15.3.
I am getting one myself ( not OWC) in my hackintosh for I think harddisk speed is the bottleneck with large format images. (not the amount of RAM if you have say 64GB)
( Apart form the software that is often the first bottleneck, see https://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=134188.0)
Will be using a PCI card with 4x 1tb 970evo samsungs on it. Alas my money is short and Corona makes it shorter- so i am still not sure.
BTW i stay with 32 bit apps ergo Majove. Cannot miss my favourite and 20 years used Media Pro yet.
