Mesa Arch, a classic that never gets old
« on: March 05, 2020, 02:34:01 pm »

It appears that is now "fashionable" to tag any landscape photograph on Instagram as "Mesa Arch", with the intent of keeping the real location undisclosed - seeing that yesterday, while exploring Northumberland for a future Workshop, made me think about the "real" Mesa Arch, and I went to look in my archives for an image of the Arch to share.

Mesa Arch is such a unique location, and being there at sunrise to witness the arch glow with the first sun's light is a truly unforgettable experience! An old photo taken in 2016 with my then Pentax 645z, Pentax 28-45mm and Formatt-Hitech Firecrest filters.

Thank you for viewing, best regards

Well done on an over-done location, Vieri! I kinda wish I had made more trips to Canyonlands and Arches back in the 1970s when I first traveled there before the places got so popular.

Classic but always excellent. I haven't bothered to visit Mesa Arch in the last 15 or more years. During my first visits, I was all alone. Sometimes another photographer showed up - it was a very very long time ago!

Nice shot, but, that's not sunrise, it's sunset.

Thank you very much indeed Larry, glad you enjoyed it! :) Yes, Mesa Arch is extremely popular, too much so in fact - I always go in winter, when there is less people around - as is all of Arches. To be fair, Canyonlands as a whole is less crowded, given the size and difficulty in navigating. I surely wish I could go in the 70s, it must have been great to have the places all for yourself :)

Excellent shot.

Thank you very much Paulo, glad you enjoyed it! :)

Thank you very much Francois, glad you enjoyed it! :) On my last visit, I was with two other people and when we go there there were two more guys. Total of five all morning, not too bad! My previous visit, however, was as crowded as the subway at rush hour... including a woman running up and down on top of the arch shooting a fitness video!

Nice shot, but, that's not sunrise, it's sunset.

Thank you! :) And yes, it is sunrise. I know, you know. I was there :)

Best regards,

Agreed.  Sunrise.  Winter, I believe.

Of course, it was winter. This is probably why the person felt he knew better than me when the photo was taken, because he was expecting the sun to be on the left side of the arch as it is in summer, see here:

Also at sunrise, but in July... ;)

And yet, it was in July. Best regards,
