Big Brother has finally arrived..!
« on: February 10, 2020, 05:11:10 pm »

Just watched this video about a company and its product called Clearview AI and, well, just give it a watch and see what you think - here is the link.

I mean it all seems a bit scary to me that those in power can do this kind of thing and do it so effortlessly these days, but as I am sure someone will quickly point out below, is that if you and me haven't done anything wrong or have anything to hide, then what is there for us to be worried about, well yes OK I get that argument, but deep down it still feels wrong and more than a little intrusive to me somehow, so what say you?

Combine the facial recognition with the walk recognition and millions of surveillance cameras and yes, the big brother will be watching everyone and everywhere.

"You have zero privacy anyway.  Get over it."

Surveillance technology, amplified by machine-learning, is not going away.  It's too useful as a tool to catch bad actors and enhance public safety, despite its potential for abuse, for governments to give it up.

I read a while back that anyone living in or visiting central London is likely to be captured on camera an average of 300 times/day.  I suspect the figure is comparable for downtown New York―not to mention Moscow or Beijing.

This is an activity that demands fastidious government regulation.  Democratically-elected legislatures need to develop general statutory authorizations and limits.  Career government experts, insulated from political influence, should then conduct public hearings to which all interested parties are invited prior to developing detailed operational regulations which set specific parameters for how the surveillance is to be conducted and used, and their proposed rules should be published for public review and comment prior to implementation.

Non-governmental organizations, including especially an unregulated press, should then monitor actual practice for instances of inadequate control or outright abuse.  Individuals who believe they have been injured by improper surveillance need access to an independent judicial system with sufficient authority to impose penalties on law enforcement or other government agencies that misuse the technology.

Democratic governments which have domestic intelligence services that operate in secret need to establish special oversight organizations composed of individuals with unrestricted access to the intelligence activities who are independent of the executive authorities to which the intelligence services report.

Russia, China, and various other countries with authoritarian governments?  Fuhgeddaboudit.

I understand now why you use sunglasses on your profile photo...  ;)
We all should wear them...
The Chinese social media like the chinese facebook 'WeChat' will be the major source for implementing this technology in China...
All state controlled.

If it existed properly here, I'd still have my Rolex.

A surveillance camera was the first thing that the Guardia Civil thought of when I made my denuncia but unfortunately, the nearest one belongs to a boat company, and only covers their property.

So my street rat bitch walks free as I hesitate walking the same road.

Bring it on!

As a matter of interest, I read a Spanish newspaper during lunch at this particular establishment that serves the purpose during my French favourite's winter break: almost every criminal case of which they write appears to end the same way: suspended sentences. Really encouraging stuff.

Detection without penalty is a waste of time and resources.
