Interesting article, Josh, but I can't help wondering what a fantastic photograph that 16th century painting by Carpaccio would have been if high resolution, 150 mp cameras had been available in those days.   ;)

Imagine the dozens of crops that could be made, each one of sufficiently high resolution for a good sized print.  ;D

The subject of the painting, “The Miracle of the Relic of the True Cross on the Rialto Bridge”, shows the miraculous healing of a madman in the upper left corner of the painting. Unfortunately, the resolution is rather lacking. A 150 mp digital camera might have done a better job.  ;)

Better, but still not as good as the first 3 mp Canon D30 DSLR, with appropriate lens.  ;)

But the original canvas is so big....It's betta than a 600MP sensor!

Nah! It's only 12 feet wide and less than 13 ft high. Divide 200 by 36, and from a 200 mp camera you get thirty six 2 ft by 2 ft photos, each about 5.5 mp. My first DSLR was the 6mp Canon 60D. Much better resolution than the larger crops you've shown.  ;)

The crops showing the healing of the madman represent about 1/16th of the area of the painting.

Joke aside, my point is that more megapixels can potentially be very useful when the street scene one is shooting has a variety of activities, as in the example of the Carpaccio painting.

You get the opportunity to print the entire scene, and/or just small crops of anything interesting in the background or foreground.

Of course....
I use Hi res mode with a Panasonic G9 capture for my paintings. These files are quite large but great to have my paintings archived this way.

No silly X8 in camera sensor shift = 420MB files. The files blew away my Canon FF.  : )

You'd have to count the bristle: one bristle = one pixel. I doubt they used the hairs from a camel at that time.

Unless the paintbrush (or canvas, wood, wall etc.) has a built-in list of details...
