Z3200ps (RevA) won't read 1728patch print
« on: November 15, 2019, 03:29:01 pm »

Using HP Utility "Paper Preset management" I printed a 1728 (12x12x12) chart to be measured later.

Paper used was a 36"wide roll with cutter "Off".

When the print was complete I left it hanging off the platen over night.

Next morning I used the top panel to move the paper back to the start position.

Back in HPU I set up for a chart reading with everything checked other than saving for Monaco.

HPU generates the attached error message a few seconds after i hit start:

FWIW: The arrows on the chart are pointing in the correct (feed) direction.

Any thoughts?

Everything is good.  The utility will ONLY accept sheets loaded with skew check.
Cut the target off the roll leaving 4-5” on the end of the sheet.
(You may have to cut along the dotted lines.)
Then load the sheet as though it was a blank piece of paper.
Once the sheet is loaded, proceed with the target scan.
The spectrophotometer has to warm up which takes time.
The console screen and computer screen may say: “preparing to print” at first, but it will read the target.
You’ll need to convert the subsequent .csv or .txt file to an ICC profile using Argyll or Drop RGB, etc., Utility will not do that conversion.
Just remember, ALL Charts to be read must be sheets loaded with skew check, unless you do a print and scan as one operation.

Best -

Thank you, Mark.

I reloaded the sheet and the printer started to read but stopped scanning after about a little more than 50% of the chart.

I gave it about 30minutes to restart and cancelled when I felt it wasn't going to resume.

I then started a Print and Read process and it only printed about as much of the chart as what it read in the first attempt.

It read what it printed and error'd out when it completed reading.  Probably because it was expecting more patches to complete the reading.

Subsequent attempts to print a chart failed to print the whole chart.  Always stopping at the same point.

I had this machine under a service contract until they sun-setted it.  Just before that point they replaced the formater.   Weirdness like this and heavy Post Script jobs shows up from time to time

which leaves me suspecting some sort of problem with the formatter OS...but thats just my opinion because it works well otherwise in normal day to day operations.  It does make profiles when I

choose the small (Standard) patch file.

On a final note, all the above is using OS X v10.9x.  Under OS X v10.11 HPU crashes when I start a color measurement.  Later in the week I'll try this with an older system on a G4 I use for

scanning.  My thought is this could all be related to the printers' firmware vs the OS it expects....or am I being a silly head?

If you have a windows machine available you could try that.  I’ve had better luck making profiles using windows rather than Mac.
