eGPU recommendations please (higher ed 3D lab)

Our Visual Arts labs are looking to upgrade from trashcan Mac Pro's with Cintiqs to something newer on the computer end, maybe a high-end current Mac mini is they compare favorably.

Apps used include Maya, Mudbox and such.

I have been asked to look at complete eGPUs (not just enclosures) starting at $500. Not the Apple one $$$$ ;-)

Recommendations?
