Maybe he didn't wake up in time to get the shot, but you sure did.

"Holly came from Miami, FLA
Hitch-hiked her way across USA
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She said hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side,
Said hey, honey, take a walk on the wild side."

Lou Reed.

Considering the handbags, Eric, I'd guess this is a woman. But nowadays who knows?

And I thought they were just strange-looking camera bags,

And besides, we don't know the said human beings' preferred pronoun.

Ambiguity is where you find her/him it.

No! Now it's "They." In the singular form. That's all the current politically-blah-blah-blah rage.

But I'm still not quite clear on how you use "they" in the singular. Is it
"I saw this person lying on the ground and they was carrying some bags," or is it
"I saw this person lying on the ground and they were carrying some bags."

Eric, how about "I saw this person laying on the ground and them was carrying some bags." That puts the situation into perspective and clarifies it.

I just realized my mistake. You cannot assume anymore that the being wants to be identified as human.

I'd also like to know how you can be doing your variable thing on the ground, and still be carrying a bag.

Life is full of mystery and signs.

For those who didn't know: this is Palermo-speak used to confuse Catania-speakers during crucial, contractual moments. The skill is currently being hired and enjoyed by politicians in Washington and London (as well as one or two LuLanders), proving to be a more lucrative export yet than olive oil, accoustic guitars and volcanic wines, collectively, in a proportion of 33% to 67%.

It's apparently also been used on English speakers to confuse them about the difference between the verbs "to lie" and "to lay." It's damned hard to find a contemporary writer, novelist or essayist, who comprehends this: "The chicken was lying in the straw, laying eggs."
