That's a good link, Russ, and says much of what there is to be said about the times.

It is quite remarkable how influential just a few individuals in public artistic life have been through their promotion of particular styles and photographers; I'm led to wonder how things would look today - or indeed, might have looked back then - had it not been for those influencers, to use a contemporary word to describe their function. Exposure, right at the beginning of something, is a mighty powerful means of promoting people by association with a new movement, whether, indeed, it really is all that new, or simply new because it has finally been classified, given its own genre, so to speak.

I guess rare the "artist" who rises to the top of the heap entirely through his own momentum.
