Flanders 1988
The last coal mine closed on a huge pile of money.
It was said the money would be invested in new economic initiatives.
Today, more than twenty years later it is clear what the economic initiatives are.
The old mine buildings are transformed in museums or pleasure domes, places to spend the huge pile of money we are sitting on. Nothing to produce or created, only to spend money.
And when I thought I saw it all, local politicians and artists joined forces and came with a fantastic idea. Let’s make a theme park and ask one artist to fill it with art.
12.000.000€ later the park is open for public.
I’m sure the local construction companies earned something with this one time cost. I can’t understand why politicians are so difficult in understanding the difference between a cost and an investment.
