5dmkIV or 5ds
« on: September 19, 2019, 01:45:24 pm »

I need to buy a new camera and I`m not sure which one i should go for - 5dmkIV or 5ds? Switching to Sony or Nikon is no option since i have lots of canon lenses and do not want to work with adapters and mirrorless cameras.
The 5ds clearly has more resolution but a pretty old sensor with low dynamic range.
Most of the time print sizes is A4 or A3. Very rarely it will be A2 (23x16inch)
Which camera would you buy?

I bought the 5Ds after the 5D2. At the time is was a lot cheaper than the 5D4 and had 50MP which I wanted for landscapes. The is a good camera but is a little noisy. If you need 50MP then get a medium format, which is what I did. For most work a 5D4 would be the workhorse and they should be more reasonable price wise now.

Thanks, also I`m not sure if I would truly benefit from a 50mp Sensor.  I mainly shoot with 24mm ts-e and 17mm ts-e lenses @ f13.
Do they even resolve 50mp at that aperture?

I bought the iv when upgrading from a 5Dmk2.
The small increase in resolution of the Ds doesn't make much difference for my usage.
What I find great is built in GPS, lower noise, better DR plus the minor UI bits like the touch screen all help make it a much nicer shooting tool. Better video quality has also proved profitable for me too, but YMMV on that particular aspect.

Why not consider the R?

The R and S seems so close as not to worth considering as separate items.
The dilemma is/was more resolution or better overall spec. If you don't need the pixels, like the OP, it seems a pretty easy decision.

I sold all my Canon gear a few years ago because I am too old to want to carry around several heavy lenses, so my main camera now is a Sony RX10III with a zoom lens that offers the 35mm equivalent of 24mm to 600 mm with beautiful results, even though the sensor is smaller than the one on my old Canon 5DII.

So if I still had Canon lenses, I would definitely go for better dynamic range over pixels, so for me it would be the 5DIV.

Thanks, since dynamic range matters more than pixels for me I bought the 5dmkIV. Like it so far!

I am on Nikon, but in your case i would have chosen the same. Beautiful colours and gradations are so important.

Sounds like a good choice. Let's see some images from it.

The 5Ds is getting quite old and the higher MP comes at a cost as has been discussed in many forums. A year ago, I wanted lighter bodies so I sold the 1Dx and 1DsIII and bought two 5DIV's. I researched the 5Ds and it didn't fit my usual projects and the additional MP weren't needed. The EOS R was just being released but I wasn't going to bet my work on a brand new system, it still hasn't matured to a pro level yet.

I have been using the 5ds for about a year.  Also chosen as I have EF lenses already.

50mpx is enough for this sized sensor and the extra resolution is quite visible (vs my old 5d classic). The DR is almost always enough, even if not quite as large as some other cameras.  I'm happy with the noise level and don't find it an issue, but ISO 3200 is my max on this camera.  When shooting handheld, I often keep ISO at 400 or 800 for high shutter speeds.

I'm sure either camera would be just fine though :)

I meant the mirrorless R. ;)

Not compatible with the OP's lenses of choice is the most obvious problem with the mirrorless R.

I didn't entertain it because of the electronic viewfinder and lack of compatibility with my version of Lightroom and not being able to use all my lenses on it too.

I thought that Canon was providing an adapter enabling the near native usage of EOS glass on the R?

Does that not work as well as advertised?

Doesn't work with shift lenses.

Really? That is a huge limitation that was carefully kept un-disclosed by Canon. I wasn't aware.

Only 'huge' for the tiny number of people using shift lenses.
The list of supported lenses is pretty clear on Canon's site.

Hi,

I didn't know that. Is that because they are manual focus lenses, or is it a physical/design issue that e.g. prohibits shift?

Cheers,

I'd assume the later.
