Lightroom 8.4 is out (for real)
« on: August 14, 2019, 01:23:20 pm »

John locked the previous post.  I can attest to LR 8.4 being out as my Workstation just updated it.  Unfortunately, I cannot add the same level of humor that dotted the previous post on this topic.  Being off by a couple of days isn't so bad after all!!!

Some of my thoughts on it - new features are handy but the signals are as important.

I've never used the Maps so I can't say whether it works or not.  I do use the Web module to create galleries on my website.  I just opened it up and it opened fine and showed my personal web template.  I didn't try to see if it would export.  I'm on Windows 10.

Well the request is for Mac users, anyone with the latest version of that OS who may or may not use those two modules but would be kind enough to click on them and confirm that LR doesn't have any issues (like crashing).

Note that the GPU processing has now changed, and it is not just an on/off option. You have to choose (GPU permitting) between "Basic" (used for display only) or "Full" (used for image processing). The Full option only works for Process version 5 or higher.

Or...

Any insight into “differences” between invoking “full” in the custom menu, and setting to Auto?  Strikes me as a bit confusing.  Is one to be preferred over the other?

MacOS 10.14.6; hardware: 2013 Mac Pro, antique MacBook Air: no problem with either Map or Web module on either platform.  I use the Map module all the time, and it is working as expected.  I don't use the Web module, but there's no sign of pathology when I invoke it.

MacBook Pro 2019 - 8 core Intel Core i9 - 32 GB RAM - Radeon Pro Vega 16 4 GB - 1TB SSD

I'd test my 27" iMac but I'm in the Blue Ridge Mtns on a photo workshop

Hope this helps....

That's cool, I'm more concerned with how it's working (or not) with MacBook's. Thanks again.
BTW, I sure have want bumps for that MBP as you've configured it.

It was time for me to move up from my 7 year old MBP.  I thought maybe this configuration would last me for 7 years as well.  😁  So far it's a very fine machine.

Not sure how the rest of you feel, seem to be focused on a couple of bugs - map, web, but this is a great release. Processing, navigating, and UI performance have all been enhanced for me. LR Classic is finally starting to perform as I would expect an app of this caliber. The one performance increase that bugged me the most before is the image counts in the folders that used to dribble in, now they are just there.
I've set my preferences to Custom with both display and processing selected. My norm to push to the limit and ease back if necessary. Has been working with these settings very well. I had to upgrade the driver on my laptop to get the Processing option to be select-able.
Curious to hear if others are seeing gains.

I was reading on the Lightroom Queen's web site regarding LR 8.4.

I have a MBP mid 2012 with open GL 3.3. LR 8.4 is asking specks that will make what GPU benefit I have now go to the digital dust bin. So until I get a new computer, looks like I stay with LR 8.3.

Still using an old NVIDIA Quadro K620 from 2014 with 8.4 Classic, which runs fine btw. CPU is an overclocked AMD Ryzen 2 2600 together with a fast M2 Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus.

Thinking about to update my graphic card, maybe to an AMD Radeon RX 570. Is there a list of recommended graphic cards for Lightroom Classic 8.4 ??

Best resource is Puget Systems who are a system builder of PCs.  they test lots of components for various use scenarios including photography and media creation.  Current hardware recommendations are HERE.  This is not fully up to date in terms of LR 8.4 but they do give good suggestions.  I'm still running a GTX 960 and it seems to be working OK.  I checked the preferences and GPU acceleration was turned on by default and I haven't seen any glitches.  I have not used the 'enhanced details' feature.  I'm still debating updating to a newer NVIDIA GPU with more VRAM but until I see direct bottlenecks I am in a wait and see mode.
