Centering image on 10" roll
« on: August 01, 2019, 12:37:06 pm »

My printer is a Canon ipf8400, 44".   I usually print large, but I have a customer who wants 100 different images at 5x7, centered on 8x10.   I found a Lexjet paper I like that comes in 10" rolls, and I'm wondering whether centering the image is simply a matter of placing the 5x7 in the center of the paper, or--and this is my concern--whether the printer demands a larger margin on one edge rather than the other.  I'm hoping that I can just use the 10" paper rather than a larger size that needs cutting/trimming after printing.

Thanks.

Bless you David. 100 different 5x7's
Sorry I cannot help but I feel for you.
Small ones became such a problem for me that my minimum size to get wholesale discount is now 12x18.
5x7 8x10's go to Walmart.

Did you heal up pretty good from your accident?

I have not done exactly this job, but I do print stacks of 8x10's and 8x12's  centered on 10" paper without any issue on the ipf8400.
I use qimage.   Windows based machine.
I hope I understand what you are trying to do.  I loaded parameters for 10" wide paper, 8" long.
Qimage easily centers a 5x7 on this with 1.5inch boarders all around.
Soft proofing it looks fine.  I did not actually print it, as I do not presently have 10" paper, but this should work.  Easy peesey.

Thanks Gary and Dan,

Sounds like it will work fine.

And yes, Dan, I've recovered fine (thanks)

As for the 100 unique images, this is a special customer for whom I've already done dozens of 20x30 prints as part of his larger project.   And I am adequately compensated for the custom Photoshop work on the 5x7s!   The customer understands that the processing takes the same time and effort whatever the size of the print.       Thanks again--I've ordered the paper and the images are ready to print.

Along the lines of what Gary said, get yourself a print programme and you will never look back.
I use Mirage Print but they are probably similar.

+1 for Qimage

But there's a gotcha: if you set up a sheet/media size of 10x8 your printer is going to give you trimmed sheets of about 10x9, maybe a bit larger. Depends on how much extra the printer needs to add. My P9000 adds about 1" to the chosen media size.

With a bit of trial and measurement you can set up a media size that accounts for this extra, and get the printer to trim to exactly 10x8.

If the printer adds more to the leading edge than the trailing edge (or the other way around) then you are going to have centering issues. Again trial and measurement will work out where to place each image to compensate. Qimage can probably do this with a template, so once you've got your numbers you can just select all 100 images, hit 'insert' and watch Qimage create 100 pages and place each 5x7 in exactly the right spot.

I can’t speak to the ipf8400 but the pro-4000 doesn’t add any extra paper to the cuts as long as you are printing a minimum length of the roll which I think is 8” for me.

At least through qimage my ipf8400 does not add any extra paper to my given dimensions.  I admit I have never tried to really play around, smallest I print is about 8x10 on 10" wide paper, 12" in length.   I have also never tried printing boarderless, so not sure how that would come into play.
I have used qimage for years.  Quirky layout, but you get used to it.  Quick, simple and works for me.
