Are there tell-tale signs that suggest doing Optimizing?

Not that I know, but you can exit LR and make a copy of the catalog with explorer / finder before doing the optimization.

Another option to check whether it is a catalog or a Sony issue, is to create a new catalog and import a few images and then try to import them again. That will rule out whatever possible issue from the original catalog

I just checked.  It appears my catalog optimizes every time in backs up.  I'm running LR6 licensed.

The screen shot only shows backup daily.  I didn’t see optimization.

Check the information above that.  It shows it was optimized and backed-up.  One minute apart when I closed the app.  Optimized first.

The problem is that this behaviour is not consistent, but a seemingly random fault.

Life's too short to waste time bug finding for Adobe when they won't fix it.

LR 6.14, so it'll never be fixed
