The problem is that the media has taken up sides because it affects their ratings.  So their discourse supports positions rather than news. That influences what everyone hears.  So rather than discussing real issues in a reasonable way, all we hear are fringe ideas. Most people reject fringes at both ends.  They would like to hear debates on both sides of issues rather than the cherry picking that goes on that's got nothing to do with truth or reasonableness.

Yes, large swathes of the left-establishment sit either center or slightly to the right of average American opinion on several important issues...

All* 20+ presidential candidates are for open borders and health care for illegals. Is that the center or to the right of the American public? So, who’s left to represent the “large swathes of the left-establishment”? Who are they?

* Well, maybe Biden isn’t... yet. There is still plenty of time for him to apologize for not falling in line with the real leaders of the party (The Squad, in case you wonder).

When a politician says “let me be very clear;D (emphasis mine):

Quote
I'm not in favor of decriminalizing or not having consequence for, let me be very clear, we have to have a secure border, but I am in favor of saying that we're not going to treat people who are undocumented cross the border as criminals, that is correct, that is correct,"

- Kamala Harris

As someone once said: when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. The Dems haven't gotten the message. Keep digging Kamala and AOC.

Typical for most politicians, they split the baby to satisfy everyone.  Harris is not for decriminalizing the border but the illegals will not be treated as criminals.  Can't they ever take a stand?   It would be so refreshing.

Trump Lashes Out at Al Sharpton, Saying He ‘Hates Whites’
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/29/us/politics/trump-al-sharpton.html#commentsContainer

It's getting personal. Trump's helped Sharpton over the years. So now Sharpton attacks the president for personal gain and Trump does what he always does - he attacks disloyal people who attack him.  Why shouldn't he? Trump is not the kind of man that rolls over when someone punches him.  He punches back.  Just what we need in the Chief Executive of the United States. Let our adversaries know they can't get away with abusing or taking advantage of us.

Here is an opinion column from Macleans magazine comparing Reagan's vision to Trump's vision, https://www.macleans.ca/opinion/losing-the-leadership-of-the-free-world/.

There are several ideas expressed in it and it's not long, so it would pointless for me to try to summarize it. If I summarize someone else's opinion, then it's no longer their opinion. If this isn't good enough for you Alan, that's ok, you don't have to read it. :)

I read it  Let me summarize it for you.  Another anti Trump diatribe by someone who isn't even American. Maybe he doesn't like our president because Trump renegotiated NAFTA and he's making less money.

That's an excellent article...

What a load of crap*.

Just one example:

Quote
The new consensus on the right is that “Americans” are white and born there.

What!? Are you serious!?

* That refers to the article, not your comment, Mike. "You" is also rhetorical.

Is there a rule that only Americans can criticize Trump? You've done a good job these last few weeks criticizing people in the rest of the world. Hell, you're even ok with that butcher in Saudi Arabia because, as you stated, 'he's OUR thug' (or something like that).

I'm confused. Are you saying it was ok for Conway to ask the journalist about their ethnic background? That dog whistle was so loud, it practically deafened every hound in the kennel.

Oh wait, was that free speech?

Sure, he can criticize Trump all he wants.  But he may have an axe to grind being a Canadian.  I was just pointing out that a non-American may be against our president's policies.  After all, an American president represents America, not Canada.  So his policies, such as the renegotiated trade agreement with Canada, gave America additional advantages over Canada that weren't there before.  So he might not like our president for policies an American would like him for. Trump butters our bread not his.

Let me add that I like Canadians and Canada.  They are good friends of ours, allies in peace and war, and valuable trading partners.  My wife and I spent a lot of money up there on our 20th anniversary visiting Niagara Falls and Toronto.  But that doesn;t mean we shouldn't make the best deal we can when regarding trade.  When I was in business, I negotiated price with customers all the time.  That's part of relationships.  Both sides make the best deal they can for themselves and move on.  They shake hands and continue to do business.  So I'm not knocking Canadians; just the opposite.

Oh, about the butcher in Saudi Arabia.  I think I called him our bastard but I never said he was a nice person.  We deal with all kinds of tyrants in the world.  Xi is one yet we talk to him and China's one of our biggest trading partners.  Should we stop trading with them because he kills adversaries or throws them in jail?  Doesn't Canada deal with tyrants too?  Why do you think your country is so holy?

The discussion must be kept to the subject, or some reasonably close approximation thereto. Personal attacks demonstrate paucity of argument and will not be tolerated.

All* 20+ presidential candidates are for open borders and health care for illegals.

Are they? Or is this more fake 'news'?

Or are you incorrectly conflating Asylum seekers with Illegals, which seems to be the same to xenophobes/racists, or some Republicans?

Cheers,
Bart

Asylum seekers are illegals, Bart, until they've been granted asylum.
