The race card predates Trump.  It's a way of exploiting an advantage by splitting off votes for elections and getting legislation approved as people roll over to not appear being racist.  It's a way of shutting other people up from discussing issues you don't want them talking about. The left, Democrats, and liberals have been using it continuously for decades to gain an advantage even if race is not part of the question.  Frankly, it splits the races up and creates tension that were not there before. 

It would be like a Dutchman in your country being called a racist if he complained about high crime in Arab immigrant neighborhoods.

The Civil War ended in 1865.  There are laws against discrimination based on color creed gender etc. You're bringing up stuff that no longer exists except for the few leftovers on both sides of the issue.  Most of America has moved on.   White people elected a black president twice.  There are black Governors, Congressmen and COngresswomen, Senators, and state legislators of color.  I thought when Obama was elected, it would be the final nail in the race issue coffin. Even though I didn't vote for him, I was excited that he won  But frankly, Obama and the Democrats continued to use the race card.  It's worked for them before so they want to keep using it.  That's created tension, new tensions, that could be avoided.  So now, you have a counter reaction which is making the situation worse.  Most white people are not racists yet Democrats call them racist.  It's insulting.  The democrats use the race card instinctively, a knee-jerk reaction whenever a white person says anything bad about a person of color or their activities.  It's part of the quill of political arrows they use on opponents. It keep us divided.

Calling a person a racist to make political points even though they're not a racist is wrong.   Calling a person a racist to shut down their speech even though their words are not racist is wrong too.   When everything becomes a racist slur, then nothing will be a racist slur.  All that happens is that innocent people get antagonized being called racist when they're not.  Then, like the dog who cried wolf, nobody will care any longer even when there is actual racism.

I agree with your first sentence.  But I fear the current President loves to provoke, spread hatred, is constantly testing the (political) system and is by no means an individual "without a racist bone in his body".  His speech and actions are most revealing.  I find the silence from a majority of the GOP deafening.

Why is it OK for Congressmen to call the President of the US a traitor for conspiring with the Russians, all which was disproved by Mueller?  I haven't heard any apologies for their contemptible and erroneous charges that went on for over two years.    In fact, they still call for impeachment and denigrate TRump for keeping filthy "prisons" on our southern border locking up mothers and children.  Yet, you get upset when the president defends himself against these raw and unfounded charges by reminding these congressmen that they ought to clean up their own districts.  It appears they can dish it out but can't take it.

Of course, none of this has to do with race.  It just so happens, Cummings is black but Trump has fought back with similar complaints about white Democrats.    This is all about the 2020 elections and the race card.  Democrats immediately say its racism to paint their enemies as racists.  It's also easier to claim racism then address the original complaint that Baltimore is a basket case and its representatives should clean it up before accusing others of malfeasance.  Just because the recipient of complaint is black, doesn't make the accuser a racist.  Bernie Sanders, a Democrat,  once called Baltimore "a third world country".  Is he a racist?

There is no racism in America, if defined by deeds. The rest is freedom of speech and freedom of mind. But of course, if Democrats let that one go, they are running out of its major victimhood to peddle. It only leaves them with freaks to represent, which is about 2% of the population, not good enough to gain 51% of votes.

Pretending that the fringe left IS the left is as silly as pretending that the fringe right IS the right. Hilariously, the left is accused simultaneously of being too radical and too centrist.

There's plenty of actual racism in the USA, albeit less and generally (though not universally) of a milder character than in years past.

The center has lots of people in it, they just don't shout about it. You wouldn't know it from the internet, though, you gotta actually go hang out with real people.

Yes, large swathes of the left-establishment sit either center or slightly to the right of average American opinion on several important issues, facts well known outside the fringe-right echo chamber.

They are rightly criticized for excess centrism on those issues. After all, the left is supposed to be, you know, left.

For obvious reasons, the fringe-left echo chamber is all too aware of this.

I have decided recently that I should not spend much time critiquing the fringes. They serve a necessary function, bracketing the discourse we that we actually need on both sides, maintaining the overton window.

What disappoints me is that the discourse we need is all too frequently drowned out by the howling fringes. But howl they must.
