Does Topaz AI slow down my PC?
« on: May 24, 2019, 10:24:25 am »

Just to know if anybody has had a similar experience:

I open a RAW file in LR
I do some adjustments there and then open it in PS as TIF.

I do there some adjustments, layers, masks etc.
In a copy of Background I apply Topaz AI as a filter.
Takes some time but that's not the issue.
After that I flatten the image and save (AI Topaz is closed)
Go back to LR

I repeat this procedure with different files.
Gradually my PC slows down ...and down..

I'm wondering if that has anything to do with Topaz.
I'm not pointing fingers at it, it's just that I don't have any clue  :(

If I restart my PC everything is OK again

You can check if it is running in the background in the Task Manager and close it if it is and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks. I'll try that

Maybe the application ( photoshop) eats all your RAM and does not free it afterwards... A common problem with photoshop.
Close photoshop in between files and if that helps that is the cause.

It might be a problem with Topaz but I bet it is just Lightroom.  On my computer Lightroom becomes increasingly unstable the longer I use it.  It doesn't much matter whether I am exporting to other programs like Topaz AI or simply editing files in Lightroom or even importing and ranking photos and applying keywords etc..  At some point the only solution is to shut down and restart Lightroom.  No rebooting required.  I have no idea why this happens but it has been occurring for a few years.  It is almost enough to make me learn Capture One ;-).

Some results:
- After closing AISharpen the App doesn't run in the background - Discarded

- Use of memory by PS:

Open PS                 236Mb

Open 1.file             533Mb
Open 2.file            1091Mb
Open 3.file            1800Mb
Open 4.file           2036Mb

Close 4.file            2036Mb
Close 3.file            2036Mb
Close 2.file            2036Mb
Close 1.file            2036Mb

!!!!!!!!!

Closing PS and opening it again starts this cycle again

Looks like it is that...

You can try one of the free memory cleaners (not to be confused with useless "computer cleaners") to keep an eye on RAM usage and purge it automatically/manually when needed.

Here's what "Memory Cleaner" looks like. It helps keep RAM use under control (in this case, on a MacBook Air limited to 8 gigs RAM).

I don't tend to use it for cleaning other items though, as I would prefer to do that manually.

And this memory cache manager is what I use for Windows:

Bart,

Looks interesting, but no claimed support for Windows 10.

Bart,

Looks interesting, but no claimed support for Windows 10.

I've been running it with Win10 since day one.

But indeed, I asked them when Win10 was first introduced (I had been using it under Win 7 for some time already). O&O did not claim that it is guaranteed to function for Windows 8 or 10, but FWIW I have not noticed any issues over the years.

Cheers,
Bart

P.S. One can of curse also try a free utility like Wise Memory Optimizer, http://www.wisecleaner.com/wise-memory-optimizer.html
It seems to function as intended, but I do not have a long time experience with it.
