Understory
« on: May 05, 2019, 09:36:05 pm »

Rain forest along the upper McKenzie River, not far from its origin in the western Cascade Mountains.
Captured while balancing both a tripod and myself on a log. At least the tripod had spiked feet. I did not.

Fantastic shot! Those colors and the light are perfect and give an impression of total and remote wilderness.
Glad to learn that you did take a dip…

The greenery is lush and well captured, but where does that blue color come from?

Slobodan, the upper McKenzie is famous for its blue pools. The water itself is very pure and clear, but in deeper places, like the head and middle of this pool, wavelengths longer than blue are filtered out by the water itself. It also picks up some of the color from the sky, especially where there is a bit of churning from a small rapid, as here. I could see this blue area from the top of a nearby hill, which is what attracted me to it. It is real, but smoothed out a bit from the slow shutter speed.

Gorgeous. I had blue water like that once or twice and elected to remove or reduce it since everyone thought I placed it there. In some cases it is just the blue of the sky being reflected in areas of deep shade. What a fabulous place Arlen!

Thanks, John. It is indeed a fabulous place. And I'm lucky that this spot, within the Willamette National Forest, is only a 50 minute drive and a bit of a hike from my house. Although the climb down to the pool with my equipment was very steep and a little tricky, and I was stung by yellow jackets whose nest I apparently disturbed on the way back up. Hard to run from them on a steep slope in the twilight with a pack and a tripod on your back.
