Aperture and DNG files
« on: November 09, 2006, 02:19:36 pm »

Can anyone comment on using aperture with DNG files?

I have all my raw files in DNG format. The files contain lots of IPTC metadata in XMP format that is essential to my workflow.

Will Aperture recognize this data and will it update it?

I would like to give Aperture a try, but if it isn't well behaved with IPTC info in DNG files, it would be a waste of time.

Thanks.

At least in 1.5, it support .DNG (just tried an import).

I too keep all my files in .DNG, in fact I import and convert as I bring them into Lightroom which naturally supports this format.

Roy Aperture only supports DNGs from the cameras which are already supported. Which is kind of annoying, however if you have a camera such as a 20D Canon or KM5D then yes, Aperture will support your DNG files.

Why not download Aperture for a 30 Day trial? That way not only can you see if Aperture supports your DNG files, but you can see if you like Aperutre as a program.

I read somewhere that Apple was working on fully supporting dng and that it might be out before the end of the year.

When changes are made to the IPTC information in DNG-files inside Aperture, is the information written directly to the file or stored in the Aperture database? Or do I need to perform a sync command similar to what I have to do in iView?

Thanks in advance,
Andreas

Haven't got a clue on that one Andreas, but it would be nice if they do fully support DNG files, I have over a thousand images taken in france last year on a Fuji S5000 (before i got my DSLR), and since it doesn't support the S5000 RAF files, it would be nice if it can suport DNGs proper.

After downloading the 30-day trial version, I think I can answer my own question.

Sadly, Aperture seems to completely ignore any XMP metadata. Thus any metadata stored in XMP in a DNG file will not show up in Aperture. Likewise, any metadata added to an image in Aperture will not be written in XMP format in an exported DNG file; the metadata will only show up in legacy IPTC format.

This is odd as Apple normally prides itself on being progressive and adopting industry standards. ITPC has been a supporter of XMP for some time and recommends it in place of the legacy format.

At least Apple is consistent. OS X also completely ignores XMP data in sidecars and in DNG files. Spotlight does not see XMP data.

Lightroom does support XMP and seems to work well with DNG files.

I did find this software that lets Aperture read Metadata from iView Media Pro.

http://www.tow.com/annoture/

I don't know if it would help with DNG files or if the developer could/would develope a solution for DNG's?
