HP Advanced Profiling Solution 1.41 with Z3200ps?
« on: April 29, 2019, 02:10:12 pm »

I've just acquired an HP Z3200ps on long-term loan from a good friend. I've worked on a few projects with him in the past on the HP, but I'm now looking forward to getting more heavily hands-on with this printer to round out my Epson and Canon LFP experience. :) Other than the inconvenience of being a back-loader, I'm still impressed by so many design elements of the HP. So much so that I may start looking seriously at the Z9+... but that's another story.

I've spent the weekend working up the printer, and have largely got everything going. I'm now at the stage of profiling various media. My own profiling workflow is based on i1Profiler with an i1 Pro 2 and i1iO. However I'd like to do some comparisons with profiles generated by the Z3200ps' own onboard spectro. I've successfully generated some basic profiles with the HP Utility, but would also like to run through the Advanced Profiling Solution workflow. Here's where I've hit my first big sticking point.

The current release of APS is 1.41, which I've installed. I have the authentic HP-branded Eye-One device and APS activation code from my friend. APS activates no problem. However so far I've been completely unable to get the software to recognize the Z3200ps, either over ethernet or USB. Given other situations with HP drivers and utilities where we've had to jump through some hoops over the past year (since the last round of new drivers), I'm half suspecting that APS 1.41 simply doesn't support the Z3200ps any more. Indeed, looking at the list of compatible printers on the support download page, it lists Z2100, Z3100, Z3100ps, Z3200 and Z6100ps. The Z3200ps is absent, among others. I don't know if this is just sloppy work on maintaining the compatibility list, or if the newest software actually doesn't support the Z3200ps.

Anyone using APS 1.41 with the Z3200ps? Failing that, does anyone have a source where I could obtain a previous release that does support the Z3200ps? I'm running Winows 7 64-bit. I will be contacting HP Support if I can't come up with any work-around in the next few days.

Thanks in advance...

It might be not working - only on the z3100..
I have it and it only runs on old OSX 10.6- very bad support- they made it and that was it. still costed me 800€ !
I believe the Z3200 has a different program for doing the same.. others will tell.

Can't say for sure but given the pace at which HP update software for the Z printers I'd be surprised if APS 1.41 is newer than the Z3200ps. Anyway, it works fine for me, I use it to profile my Z3200PS from both my PCs, one Win10 and one XP. Connected by ethernet.

Thanks for that report, William. If I may also ask, what driver version are you running?

Kers: The Z can also be profiled through the HP Utility, and I've done that. It works. I am hoping to try the APS workflow as well and see what, if anything, may be different or better about it.

There are some links in this thread to use alternative routes with for example ArgyllCMS to create profiles with Z3xxx printers:
https://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=129356.0

I use the 1728 patches target +  ArgyllCMS route these days but with the command lines instead of the GUI. For both Colormetric and Perceptual printer profiles. Keeping APS usable became too much a hassle, still have it though.

The thread itself describes some expert approaches if you are not satisfied with the 1728 target results.

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

Mine is an model "A", I'm on Driver version: 61.121.362.41 Firmware: TR12-RB_14.0.0.2. Both far from current but I'm firmly in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" camp with regard to printer drivers.
