Any company that prints on silk fabric?
« on: April 20, 2019, 12:51:56 am »

I have a rush job to print an image on silk fabric for a largish wall hanging (about 20"x 30"). I found a place on line (digitalsilk.us) which appears to specialize in this but unfortunately they are taking a month hiatus and will not be able to do this by the time it is needed. Anyone know of another printer who specializes in printing on fabric?  Thanks

Does it have to be silk? The most economical option is PhotoTex. Certainly not silk but a great
repositionable fabric.

I 2nd Photo-tex per Dan's suggestion.  It's a great product and you have a few different options available.  If just a regular process, the main photo-tex will be just fine.  Also, it depends on which printer you'll be using and if you're having a company do it, verify which model they have to get the correct version.

We also stock their products.  Let us know if you have any questions on this otherwise.

Sorry didn't see your query earlier, since you have a rush.
I don't print on fabric myself, but my wife is a textile artist and clothing designer and she has been having prints done on silk, which I have been impressed with. She gets her bulk work done in India but for one-offs such as your job, she uses https://www.papilioprints.com/custom-design-ready-charmeuse-silk-fabric. I do "regular" fine art printing on my Canon 8400 and thought about trying to learn fabric but the commercial firms have such a nice result we thought it wasn't worth the effort.
I would definitely suggest going with silk for any free-hanging installation because there the fabric draping will be much more important than in a stretched or bonded mount and silk is hard to beat for how it drapes.

Look up Dharma Trading Co. (L.A. CA).  I have printed on some of their inkjet receptor coated silk.  Comes in several weights.   It comes with a removable paper backer.

Thanks TSJ.  Although the posted links of those who can print look good I would like to try myself on my P9000 and all I was able to find till your post were small US Letter size sample sheets.  This site has a great selection of fabric coated and on rolls that will run through my printer.  Nice that they have small sample rolls as well.

Thanks for the info.

Robert,  Try this link:  https://www.dharmatrading.com/transfers/rolls/fabrisign-silk-inkjet-fabrics.html#reviews

Their website looks like something from the mid-90's...………… not a smooth navigation experience.

I've used the Dharma Trading fabric (Habotai 10) on an Epson 7900 (straight paper path, even from the roll feed). It worked, although it left threads inside the printer that needed to be picked out - it always felt like an adventure to get it to print (and a lot of material got ruined in the process - I'd say 40%). The result is beautiful, especially with light and airy images. I wouldn't count on the full gamut of a regular paper - it's an exotic material with its own look.

I'm not sure I'd dare run it through a Canon printer, because I'd be afraid of it separating from the backing paper going around the curve in the paper path. If this stuff gets loose in the printer, it could easily ruin a head or get wrapped around something in the feed... I think I actually have a roll somewhere, but I print on a Canon Pro-2000 now, and I don't want to blow a head.
