There are those who travel and enjoy being in synch with local cultures and there are those who bring their own culture with them travel and broadcast it widely. Given the prevalence of westerners disrespecting local social norms, the sign is warranted – especially for the many who don’t bother reading up on a place before visiting. Worse are those who are aware of more conservative dress and behaviour, but still ignore it, flaunting their western laissez-faire (or, as some say today, ‘who gives a f***’) attitude. Sad.

I had one night in Vang Vieng last month, when I had planned to stay three nights.  This place is for people who are young and people who think they are young.

Laos has so much to offer independent travelers interested in shooting landscapes, culture and people but VV is best avoided.

The only time a foreign place ( specially in a foreign country ) could/should/might be avoided by the old, the young, the not so young etc. is, imho, due to accessibility or required facilities availability.

All long-term migrants, from whatever culture they might originate, do this: you can leave your country but it never really leaves you. Especially when you've had a couple too many; just one more, and then another. (Thanks to swamp pop rock, this open philosophy classroom is free to all!)

Perhaps I’m mis-interpreting your remark, but it seems like you are saying you have no regard for the fact that you are a guest in their home.

When young and on our travels we frequented places in the Med where nudity and lovemaking were the norm and no one so much as batted an eyelid. The locals were either participants or conspicuous by their absence. These days we wouldn't even consider dressing inappropriately.

Go figure.

I believe one should respect the laws, customs, traditions of any place one visits; irrespective if that place is considered a ' third world ' or a ' first/second ' world place by an alien to that place.
There can be no excuse to do otherwise.
