The Rhine - 1914

I was reading not long ago some letters written by (now distant) relatives posted on one side of the bridge at that time  in Laufenburg and visited the place.

Beautiful and peaceful now . Some houses are still from that time. The bridge is new

On the left is Germany on the right Switzerland

Here is a view from around that time. Maybe you can recognize some houses.
The river had rapids at that time but it was "tamed" between 1909/14 for the construction of a hydro electrical power station
The level of the water is now about 10 m higher than before so the rock foundations of some houses are under water

The St.John's Church on the Swiss side is from around 1500 AD. The historical houses are also very old

On the German side you can see the barrier too, it crosses the u/f on the words "Laufen" of "Gasthor Laufen" (Big rosa house)

They are always open now, although Switzerland is not "Europe" :-)
