We’re spending a week on Scotlands Ardnamurchan Peninsula in mid May. Does anyone have any suggestions for photographic locations?

Thanks

I would recommend visiting Sanna Sands and Castle Tioram. Both locations are impacted by sea tides and are probably best visited at low tide.

There are some nice dunes and sinking sands at Sanna Bay, which can most easily be accessed from a parking lot at Sanna. Rock seams on the beach make for an interesting pattern with pools at low tide.

Castle Tioram is located on a tidal island in Loch Moidart and can only be accessed at low or mean tide. Some unaware tourists trapped on the island were released once the water flow reversed in the loch, which happened very quickly when I was there. The surrounding of the castle can be interesting in May with yellow flowers in full bloom (gorse, aka ulex).

Otherwise, up North towards Mallaig on the A830 lies the shortest river of the UK, River Morar. Morar Bay offers a dramatic change between low and high tide and is worth visiting in both conditions as a point of comparison.

Another activity which is especially interesting in May would be to book a tour to the Treshnish Isles and Staffa, to see newly born puffins learning to fly and the iconic Fingal's Cave. Tours operate almost daily and leave from Kilchoan ferry pier. For details, see this website.

Cheers,

Fabien
