High contrast subjects
« on: April 02, 2019, 12:24:35 pm »

Backlit dark birds against bright sky using only hard tools with zero feathering. Why are some black from the birds “leaking” out in the sky close to their bodies? What am I doing wrong?

A visual example would help.

Sounds a bit like flair which is to be expected based on the description of the image but yeah, an example would be real useful and perhaps the original raw.

Is this after processing?  It's quite typical when clarity especially is used more than a little.  I very often see it with, for example black branches against a clear blue sky or some other almost silhouetted object (flag pole, chimney etc).  I got round it by backing off global clarity (at high levels) and using the brush tool to paste it in where I needed it and making sure I didn't overflow in the sky.  I've not done exhaustive tests but clarity in combination with vibrance might be a little worse

Examples of what you're seeing would help

See especially the left crane. Yes, after processing. Clarity +36.

Yes, that is exactly what I was describing.
What does it look like after you back off the clarity?

Yes, you are right. I reduced the clarity to + 8  and was more careful with the sharpening and the noise and now the black leakage is nearly invisible. Thanks!
