Import sort Problem
« on: March 26, 2019, 10:14:45 am »

Gentlemen,
I am using LR 6, don't want to pay Adobe any more, I have paid them enough, so LR CC is a ways off.
When importing photos into LR 6, the import module says the 'sort order' is filename, which is what 90% of photographers should want. When the files load into LR 6 they come in as "added order' and I have to change it to 'filename' every crappy time. Can I fix this somehow?
I shoot careful brackets and i need the order that I photograph to be correct.
Thanks, Brian

I'm running LR6 also. There are two places I have found where you can specify sort order. One is in the Import module and the other is in the Library.
In my LR6, the sort order in Import seems to be set at "Off" (haven't ever changed it there), and in the Library, the sort order is set to "Capture Time."

It would seem to me that Capture Time should give you the order in which the photos were taken, since it uses your camera's capture time for each image. "Filename" shouldn't give you the order in which you take them, unless you have a file naming scheme that includes the capture time, which normally would only appear in the EXIF data.

Try setting order to "Capture time" in Library (grid) and see if that fixes it. The order in capture seems unimportant to me.

I use capture time.  Do make sure your clock on your camera(s) is/are correct, particularly if you are using more than one camera.  Last evening I was  photographing an event and I needed a telephoto lens and a wide/normal zoom.  I did not want, nor had time, to keep changing lenses so used two bodies.  Importing in to LR6 then kept them in order.

Best wishes,

Thanks Eric and Jonathan for your time.

Eric, it doesn't seem that I explained my problem clearly. My camera, a Nikon D600 labels the photos sequentially, like dsc6301, dsc6302, dsc6303, and dsc6304, on and on till all photos are accounted for. I leave them like this and want them imported into LR6 just like that. When I am in the Import Module the sort selected is 'Filename' (exactly what I want). When I hit import, it brings all the files into the Library module BUT the sort order automatically changes to 'Added Order'. I did not select added order nor do I want it, I want to get rid of 'added order'
Another way to look at it is that the SORT in the Library automatically says 'Added Order' no matter what I do. I need to change the sort to 'Filename" every time I import files into LR6 so that my files line up correctly. 'Added Order' mixes everything up badly.

Jonathan, I decide to try sort 'Capture Time' and it did bring the files in the correct order but the sort order in the Library module was still stuck at 'Added Order' but it didn't mix the files up. So I will try it this way and see if it continues to work.

As far as I can tell, the sort order in Import is not "sticky." It seems to be overruled by whatever sort order is in Library.
However, the Library sort order does seem to be sticky, so if you change the sort order in Library to either Capture Time or Filename, it will keep the same sort order the next time you open LightRoom.

So it seems to me you need to set the sort order once in the Library module, and then leave it alone (and don't bother with sort order in Import.)

I believe the sort order in LR is per folder. If you have capture time, or whatever, and you move a thumb nail to a different position it will change to custom order.

I know the OP is talking about import. So not sure if my post here is of any relevance.
