Living on the Streets of Varanasi
« on: March 13, 2019, 10:57:07 am »

An elderly gentleman living on the streets of Varanasi. Many elderly from all over India move to Varanasi to realise their wish to die in India's most holy city and be cremated on the ghats of the Ganges.

Great image.

Varanasi is a great place for candid portraits mainly in open spaces.  Don't get too close to the burning ghats.  When I was there a few years ago a guy from Holland had his two DSLR's thrown into the Ganges.  He got too close to a mourning family and annoyed them by shooting continually.

I had no interest in shooting the burning ghats. That said, I was offered permission to do so, for a fee of course, but declined out of respect for the deceased and their families.

Varanasi has so much more to offer.

Another fine and sensitive portrait.

Thanks Eric, appreciated.

We witnessed many a difficult scene on our travels, including those that we baulked at capturing, but in this case the subject, however impoverished, was dignified, proud, charming and accepting of his lot.
