Opening older files- photoshop 3.0 required
« on: March 06, 2019, 08:37:12 am »

I am importing old files into lightroom- started using lightroom in 2009, and have thousands of images from earlier times I am starting to import- mostly to use the metadata searchs in lightroom.
Multiple files say "Photohop 3.0 is required to open this file."  Yes these are old.  They are in a .psd format.  Win10 machine, running latest lightroom classic and photoshopCC.
Is there an easy way to rescue these files?
Thanks again

Where do they say that? In Windows, in Import, in Library?

In the library and import windows.  Cannot even make a thumbnail.
I think I remember adobe changed .psd format years ago.  I probably have 100 images like this.  Not vital, but would be interested in seeing what they are.

Can you open them in Photoshop from Windows? And let's see a screenshot of the Library with this message.

Interesting- lightroom cannot open them.
However photoshop can- I can save them with max compatibility and it seems to work.
I need to find a batch way to do it, as I have over 2000 of them.  But moving forward.
I can get this now

You indeed want that max compatibility on, from now on.
You might consider just saving them as TIFF, you'll lose nothing doing so.
You can make an Action for Save in PS, then do a batch open and save for all the images in a folder. That action can be set to save as .PSD or TIFF.

You can also use Image Processor (under File->Scripts) or Image Processor Pro (under File->Automate) to convert a folder of images to TIFF, JPEG or PSD files or open a folder in Bridge, choose the files, then use Tools->Photoshop->Image Processor or if you have the IPP installed, it should be under Dr. Brown's Services.

Choose the conversion format then choose a location for the new files and you won't have to create an action from scratch.

I batch process my master files this way regularly and it works fairly quickly. It sure beats opening and saving them one-by-one!
