Dynamic range: Canon 6D II vs RP vs R

Jared's tests here seem to confirm the RP sensor being the same as that of the 6D II. Already knew the R sensor is the same as 5D IV's.

Linear RAW development in ACR, no NR (if this makes sense in ACR) and no unsharp mask:



100% crops with shadows linearly lifted:


The R can handle the scene, the 6D II and RP can't.

The 6DII is basically same gen sensor as the 6D, right?

I don't think so. Same FF physical sensor size, but different resolution. 6D has a 20MP and 6DII has a 26MP sensor.

Another confirmation that waiting for the 'Pro' R is a good idea, IMHO. Unless you just have to have mirrorless now.

That assumes that Canon has (vastly) improved sensor technology lined up for the pro bodies and I've seen no evidence of that yet. They can do resolution and I expect a mirrorless 5DS replacement soon but whether it will be on par with other sensors with regards to DR, sensor readout speed etc is anyone's guess - my guess is that it won't be.

Personally I'm pretty happy with my R - I've spent 5 hours today shooting portraits and it didn't skip a beat. I don't expect to buy another camera body in the next 3-4 years unless this one stops working.
