X-rite support question I asked...
« on: February 11, 2019, 11:36:44 pm »

I sent the following to the X-Rite support contact email. Does anyone else find the lack of an integrated backup for this program an issue like I have?

Instrument Product Name: i1Pro2
Software Product Name: i1Profiler
Operating System: Win10 x64
Instrument Version Number: 1.8.3
Connectivity Type: USB
Details: Can a feature be added to i1Profiler to enable a backup to a file of all the settings, profiles, templates etc that I create? Several times I have had to do clean installs due to system issues, thus, it is problematic to just tell my backup program to bring everything back as it may bring back the source of my issues. Bringing them back individually from hidden folders is a painful and time consuming task.
Essentially, anything in Xrite i1 Profiler to be backed up independently when I choose. Then, after a reinstall, I could just find that file and tell i1Profiler to bring it all back from the backup file.

I received the following reply...
We will forward your inquiry and feedback to our R&D department, your suggestion will be considered as a new feature of the next update.

Does anyone know if this question has been asked before??

If you were to use the "Save Workflow" feature of i1Profiler and then back-up the i1Profiler folder to which Workflows get saved would this not solve your problem, as you could re-import that folder with any re-install?

As Mark says; Just copying the i1Profiler folder from C:/Program Data/X-Rite/ to somewhere convenient saves all your settings and is easy enough to copy back if you need to.

I'd say that the chance of X-Rite adding some sort of back up option is well beyond unlikely.

I agree; hell, they're remiss at getting even known and admitted bugs fixed from one version to the next.

ditto.  cannot imagine XRite doing something like that.  They have a hard enough
time producing working software.

Backup everything you can't afford to lose using a dedicated backup application.
I use on the Mac, a Symbolic link to the 'root' (main) folder that contains all the X-rite stuff and link it to Dropbox.
And I backup every file on the Mac to multiple external drives.
And I use CrashPlan.
All this isn't X-rite's domain to deal with. It's users who need to handle this.

that’s interesting because I did the same thing (use a symbolic link in /Library/App Support/XRite to point to a userspace area) and i1Profiler immediately barfed and would not restart citing error in installation.

Even the XRite support dude indicated that the only place it looks is /Library/.............

Morning All,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I do use a dedicated backup application onto 4 seperate external disks. Whilst i was unaware of the C:/Program Data/X-Rite folder workaround, I was also wanting it to reinstall the icc profiles which live in windows/system32/spool/drivers/color. There are also others that I need in similar locations.
However, that folder is a damn good start which will make it easier. I appreciate that tip. :)

Again, take the same approach.

Whilst back up systems that will restore everything on a HDD have their uses and may suit many people, it makes sense to also devise a personal approach that suits an individual's own requirements.
Icc profiles a good example of that. In the course of investigation and experimentation you may end up with lots of profiles in your system folder. Copying ones that you might never again need off to another folder, can act as both a back up and also stop cluttering the lists of profiles in applications.
A back up option in i1Profiler won't solve this issue.

I do understand that. I am annoyed that some of the required files say ni LR or PS are buried deep in hidden folders. I never seem to remember to get a specific backup just for those settings so end up having to hunt them down through my full backups...

I'll give it another go.  Perhaps a blonde moment on my part :/

Did you actually go in via Terminal and use the 'ln -s' command or did you GUI 'Make Alias' ?

Not Terminal, a utility to create them (I'll have to check the desktop Mac for the name).

I know that 'Make Alias' is somehow slightly different (in some weird OSX-y way) than unix 'ln' (symbolic)
but not sure of the under-the-hood differences.
