L Bracket For Nikon Z7 - concerns
« on: January 29, 2019, 10:52:44 am »

I just got a Kirk L bracket for my Nikon Z7.  I also ordered the L bracket for the FTZ adaptor but I learned that you can't use both.  My concern is that when I use the Nikon 70-200 f4 lens without a plate on the FTZ adaptor, it seems there is a lot of stress on the tiny Z7 body.  Do I really now have to buy a lens collar for the 70-200 f4 lens?  I now need to return the L Bracket for the FTZ adaptor.  I'm curious how other landscape photographers are handling this?

Yes, I bought the bracket for the FTZ adaptor and ther Z7, but I can only use one backet at a time.  I think I'm just going to return the FTZ backet.

I just ordered the new L-plate for Z from 3-Legged Thing. According to reviews you can use it with the FTZ. We shall see !!

Hi Jeremyrh,

For my Canon 70-200 F4 that I use with my Sony A7r II I bought a tripod collar, maybe you can do the same: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/926439-REG/kirk_nc_70_200_lens_collar_for_nikon.html (I saw other more cheaper options).

Regards,

David

Thanks David:

That item is of a mystery 'cos my 70-200 f/4 comes with a collar. The issue is more with my Sigma 50mm.  The L-bracket should be here soon so I can check how it works!

I wouldn't worry about the Sigma 50mm all THAT much. It's a heavy lens, but not all that long. Part of the reason people mount long telephotos to the tripod instead of mounting the camera is that they are very long, with huge, heavy front elements a foot from the camera. The Sigma doesn't come with a tripod collar, and the front of it isn't any farther from the back of the Z7 than it is from the back of a D850 by definition - the distance from any point in the lens to the sensor is the same for any compatible camera at a given focal distance, or focusing wouldn't work. That's why the FTZ adds length - that distance is shorter in an unadapted Z7.
