Storms at Dawn (Mono)
« on: January 15, 2019, 11:17:02 am »

What a wonderful time I had in Arches N. P. last October and I can't wait to go back (eventually).

Although I do imagine the weather doesn't do this this type of 'photogenic' too often in this part of the US and is usually more likely to be wall to wall blue empty skies, just like it was the last time I was in Yellowstone. But obviously this time it knew I was coming with my camera and so put on a really good show just for me  ;D

A good one, Dave. I like the processing.

Thanks Russ  ;)

It was originally quite a brightly coloured dawn shot, with lots of warm tones across the sky, but then for some reason I decided to try a mono conversion of it (probably after Terry suggested I try that with my last shot from Arches on here and which I miserably failed to achieve well). Yet this one slipped into a mono version quite nicely and so here it is and I am so glad you like it.

I prefer the colour version. As it is, this B&W conversion seems to lack true blacks and whites, seems a bit greyish.

This is a beauty, and very convincing.

Beautifully composed, Dave. Expansive, yet well-proportioned. And the mono conversion worked very well.

Given the slight ‘dullness’ of the face of the monolith, I would recommend an adjustment brush application with a slight increase in exposure and clarity, just to help set it apart from the surrounding tones. But that’s a minor tweak and, perhaps not necessary if the raw/print shows what the jpeg doesn’t.

What a productive trip! This photo alone, printed large and hung in the lounge says it all, I’m sure.

Paulo, this is a totally different shot from the previous one I showed from Arches N.P and which I think you are referring to.

Hi Terry - the light on the Bute was only picking up some of the side light coming over the horizon, as the angle of the side face of the Bute and main light source weren't directly aligned, so it was more of a glancing light than direct light type of thing.

So here is the colour version as it was before I started pushing it around in mono and adding more contrast - which I still quite like quite a lot, but then I realised that I wasn't too sure about the pastelness of the colour (another new word I have just invented there I think) and the warmer tones of the original, which I may have overcooked a little and hence why I tried the image as a more 'gritty' mono conversion, which I like much more than the colour version.

Thanks again everyone for all your comments, much appreciated  :) :) :)

I much prefer the B&W version, but I think it could be improved using Terry's suggestion (which wouldn't work on the color version anyway.)

Yes, colour is fine, but B&W produces a strong composition.

B&W is more dramatic and is a better fit for the location.

I hate giving my opinion on the work of others and I like this picture very much.
Only that I would try to separate the foreground from the plane of the monolith a little.
And that pland from the background.
This part seems a little flat to me
