10 Day Twip w/o Laptop
« on: October 29, 2006, 11:06:43 am »

Hi,

My wife and I are going to Utah and Arizona for 10 days of hiking and photography and I'm trying to avoid bringing a laptop. I have about 14GB of ramcards, which will certainly cover the amount of pictures I'd normally take in that time. Is there something I'm not thinking of, though, that I won't be able to do without a laptop?

Thanks,
Rourke

Probably not, although I like having the backup.  I've also used laptops on the road for checking email (to keep up with requests for the photography business), for directions and information about locations and weather (but there are other ways of getting that, I'm sure), and double-checking that I've got "the shot" if I've got a particular subject I'd like to photograph in an area I'm going to be in more than a day or two.

That having been said, some trips I just grab one of the Epson gadgets--and don't even look at what I"ve shot until I'm home, so a flash-only trip seems pretty possible for me.

Have a great trip!

Hi, Check this site for an alternative solution, especially if compatability with Phase One RAW files is essential.

If backup is a concern, also keep in mind that a camera can fail. An option to a laptop is a second camera, and shoot the great (non-moving only) shots with both cameras. The memory card in the second camera is your back-up, should the other one get damaged.

14 GB for 10 days are not bad... How big are your raw files? I travel with less than that, actually a single 4 GB card giving me +- 700 raw shots. At the end of the day, or during coffee breaks I simply weed out the obviously missed shots and the so-so pictures. I do not feel there is any need for me to take home missed shots. Actually I am happy if among a few hundred pictures there are 10-20 that I really like. Editing while travelling can be a time-saver as well...

All these discussions were the same to traditional film photography.  It was nice shooting with a Hasselblad to switch magazines mid way through a roll with an "A" and  "B" set that did not get mailed to the lab together or mixed in the processor on the same day.
We have it so easy with digital with the ability to check files and camera operation immediatly.  I see no reason to shoot a scene twice with two digital cameeras that is just nuts!

Have some fun and trust the equipment.

I would check that the Hasselblad was all in order once or twice a day (those lens shutters have a reputation of failing even thought everything seems in order so I would look throguht the camera and trip the shutter to be sure once in a while).

Perhaps I just have not been burned bad enought by digital quirks.  Once  a year I have a card that is intitially unreadable but I always seem to get the files (or most) off eventually.

Those portable images safes worry me the most, the one time I used one I got burnt!

4 gig cards are cheap!  And CF's are extreemly reliable!

I shot last fall for two weeks and used a Vosonic portable hard drive (80gb) VP6210. It has CF (and other) card slots for transfers. I shot 60gb and had to have a secure way to manage traveling and shooting. While I had a laptop too, it was mainly for blogging.

http://www.vosonic.co.uk/vp6210.html

You'd need to be able to recharge the battery daily,as transfers sucks lots of power for some reason.

fyi...before I left for home I had a photo lab burn everything onto DVDs, but I was super paranoid coming back into the USA that something might get lost or damaged.

If you want some storage on the road and have a recent iPod (Photo or Video - must have a color screen), you can get the iPod camera connector.

Apple iPod Camera Connector

If your camera supports PTP USB connections you just plug the camera into the iPod with the connector and a USB cable and it will suck all the images off the memcard and onto the iPod.

I always have a laptop when I travel but don't take it with me in the field.  Instead I use the iPod/connector in the field for immediate backup when I switch out CF cards.  This way ultimately I have 3 copies of my shots - CF card (gets erased when I get back home, iPod, and laptop - when I get back to the hotel).

I feel comfy & securewith  Wood's & Raoul's methods, combined: Download everything to a P-2000, but also leave the most obvious keepers on the CF cards.

I've had good luck with a refurbished P-2000 from the Epson site.  'Refurbished' seems to mean, at least for Epson, that someone else took a hit, & now you're even safer than with a new one.
