Welcome! Fine shots, both. I think I'd prefer the second if it had as little of you as the first (that's not a personal comment!). Cropping a little off the left would add mystery.

And utterly ruin the equilibrium.

I like the shot as is, but am happy not to be in the terrain. I don't think the light sucks at all: it gives a mood that works on me. Just because I don't fancy the idea of the place doesn't suggest the thing doesn't work; it might actually mean that it has worked very well indeed.

Jeremy, I agree for just the reason you said, this setup just didn’t allow for that much.

Rob, it was just one of those days where there was a thin layer of cloud over the whole sky, and everything was very flat.  This road is only about a 30 minute drive from my house. I love the country down there and should spend more time there than I do. With work, a three year old and a three month old, I just don’t get out as much as I once did.

Thanks again everyone for the feedback.

I think the first shot is exceptional, the second less so, but there's no shame in that.

Thanks for all the help. These are in line with what I’ve been trying. The one with the crosses is from a year ago. I just never got the shot
I had in my head. The other is from a couple weeks ago. Both are buddies I happen to be out with at the time.

That was supposed to be “shot”. Sorry

This series is really growing on me.
My favorites so far are the first and the crosses. I all of them, the mood and ambiguity are quite powerful and expressive.

I like the crosses photo a lot. Suggests to me the guy with the gun has just shot the headstock off the right grave guitar/marker. And may be responsible for the graves too.  ;)
