Another bit from the Guardian
« on: January 01, 2019, 08:24:33 am »

Sadly I cannot link directly to the article and have to do so indirectly which will probably break at some stage. If I can find the real link I'll post it.

How to improve your street photography

Don't worry, I am sitting comfortably and I have popcorn and beer ready.

This is important: "ordinary moments that become extraordinary when you freeze them in time". Most of what passes as street here and elsewhere is ordinary moments which remain ordinary when you freeze them in time. This criteria certainly goes beyond some pablum about the image having to tell a story. Any fool can make up a story for any image.

I was kidding. I don't like popcorn, drink almost no beer and I'n not a US citizen or resident.

On the other hand I did have some really nice beer when I visited California, I was pleasantly surprised.

It's just a way of suggesting I expect a reaction to the article's content - which hasn't materialised. So that's put me in my place. And quite right too.

American beer is way superior to what it was in the 20th century. Lotsa smaller outfits making good stuff. Just stay away from the soda pop-ish major brand swill.

I'm more a wine/spirits guy, and not that much of either normally (coffee is more my thing), but when travelling I like trying out local brews if they exist. It's been a long time since I've tried anything I'd rate as less than "pretty good."

You mention wine - can you explain why wine in California seems so much more expensive than Californian wine in the UK?

I can get an OK bottle of red in the UK for 6 quid but I saw nothing much like that in CA even in liquor stores.

His eyes narrow - do you send us the rubbish?

Spirits though, my daughter had a seizure when she saw how cheap rum is and I had a regrettable liaison with a bottle of Tanquery.

I can tell you that tequila is cheaper in CA than in Michigan, where I live.  :D
