LR changes picture settings on its own
« on: December 30, 2018, 12:24:10 pm »

Hi!

I have a small problem - when I import pictures into LR, LR changes them automatically for some default settings, and I am unable to detect what I pressed wrong or maybe set up wrong settings. Maybe someone knows what/where I did wrong.

Two things. Is there a preset here in the import page? 2nd image. Did you make edits and save them to the Default Develop Settings?

:-\ I have been using LR for quite a long time and I did nothing in the settings (my opinion) and all the time was ok, but now when I import pictures and open them first time LR starts "thinking" and makes some default changes to images, same on each picture. Maybe I pressed something on the main window in the library or develop, I just can't imagine it.... must be very simple ( I hope).

When Lightroom imports an image, it attaches its default profile to it - Adobe Color - not Camera Matching profiles that you see on the back of your camera, and which flash briefly on your computer screen after import to LR.

Thank you! I changed my camera's colour settings from srgb to rgb and now everything is alright.... but I never changed this setting before, I was using camera's default settings all the time, I have Nikon D850. New year has begun and I will start learning about colours....  ;D, Happy New Year!

The initial preview is that created by the camera as a JPEG based on the camera settings. That's proprietary. LR's previews are rebuilt and while you can get closer using a color matching profile, don't expect an exact match as this is proprietary rendering too. And isn't necessary what you'll end up with from rendering the raws moving forward. The previews on the back of the camera, the JPEGs it creates are just that, a preview as otherwise, raw is raw.

I had the same confusion about this a while ago.

My issue is that I shoot a lot of underwater photos, which come with very unique processing challenges. I've often found the camera's profile (what you briefly see in LR before LR generates its own preview) looks like a better starting point for editing these images. The change can be quite dramatic with underwater photos. I've even found myself trying to replicate that look with LR's adjustments to no avail.

This is obviously a unique scenario and don't find this to be a concern with above water photos.

I think I've read there are ways to generate unique 'profiles' for LR to use instead of its own? And I don't mean preset develop settings. I could be wrong though, I've no real working knowledge of this.

Can anyone comment if this is possible? I've love to explore the option if it exists.

Cheers,

Chris
