Looks more like classic flare. Directly across from the sun if are referring to the rainbow lines on the rocks.   Common with many wides. 14-24 does this but curved.  Same rainbow corner flare.

I agree it is flare but its flare that is a reflection of the sensor in the camera and I have  never seen that before.

Have to assume that this particular lens or camera has a rectangular kind of exit-pupil baffel (or a lens adapter with internal reflections).

The camera is a Nikon D850 and the lens is a Nikon 14-24 f/2.8.. I guess it must have somehow reflected.

Denying the right of selfie to sensors would be unconstitutional.

The direct sun is pretty bright, and the area of the reflection is pretty dark........

I looked at my 12-24 and there is no rectangular baffle in the lens. The OP's explanation may be correct. The 12-24 is known to be prone to flare with a bright light source in the image.

Could that be the image of the autofocus array?

Is this a DSLR image?  Was there any stray light going into the eye cup?

very strange.  totally off the wall guess, reflection of the sensor off of the back lens element.

It's not a rectangle, just 2 vertical lines.  It looks a little like a rectangle due to the shading of the rocks but I see no horizontal lines connecting the verticals.  Perhaps Stephen could post a crop but normal lens flare I'd guess.

Thanks for your reply, it’s the sensor for sure and a perfect rectangle. Did you look on the left of the image?
I’m traveling for business and can’t crop the image for you until I return

I'll be interested to see a crop from the original, but here's a magnified crop from the screen and I really don't see any horizontal lines connecting the verticals.  If it were a reflection of the sensor face then I think we'd see a change in the shadow density between the lines and I don't see that.  Anyway, very interesting ...
