Synthetic AI generated portraits...EeK
« on: December 18, 2018, 02:03:39 am »

So, this happened-synthetic generated portraits by an AI. This person doesn't exist...

Fake faces made by Nvidia's researchers. Image on left is generated based on input from the faces on the right.

These incredibly realistic fake faces show how algorithms can now mess with us

Quote
A new approach to AI fakery can generate incredibly realistic faces, with whatever characteristics you’d like.

by Will Knight  December 14, 2018

The faces above don’t seem particularly remarkable. They could easily be taken from, say, Facebook or LinkedIn. In reality, they were dreamed up by a new kind of AI algorithm.

Nvidia researchers posted details of the method  for producing completely imaginary fake faces with stunning, almost eerie, realism (here’s the paper.).

The researchers, Tero Karras, Samuli Laine, and Timo Aila, came up with a new way of constructing a generative adversarial network, or GAN.

GANs employ two dueling neural networks to train a computer to learn the nature of a data set well enough to generate convincing fakes. When applied to images, this provides a way to generate often highly realistic fakery. The same Nvidia researchers have previously used the technique to create artificial celebrities (read our profile of the inventor of GANs, Ian Goodfellow).

Hum...the faces are real, but I wouldn't consider them good "portraits".

In the Artificial Celebrities link - aren't they all artificial then? - the girl has Jean Shrimpton's nose. Can she have it back, please?

A proof of impossibility or an evidence of absence argument are typical methods to fulfill the burden of proof for a negative claim (Wikipaedia)

This is not fulfilled here  ;D. The person MAY exist.

Just a well meant joke (But correct, isn't it?)

In the girl, the right and left eye and eyebrows are very different, looks like a mashup of different faces or a bad attempt at liquify

When an advertiser now claims that they have a "new face" for their product ads, they may really mean it.

That's not the point, those are merely minor optimisation problems that will get better with each generation. Since the breakthrough is the speed of learning.

The application potential is genormous, even for photographers or artdirectors. It allows natural language commands like "make the hair more blond and shiny" or "a caucasian tanned look for the west, and a pale, slightly asian appearance for the east". You know, the usual indeterminate language that artdirectors speak, except from now on we can actual blame them for not making sense since the computer makes no mistakes and does exactly as you wish. (They used to be able to hide behind their artistic "vision" and blame everyone else for not understanding.)

In the not too distant future this means totally convincing actors on demand. We'd like a combination of Tom Cruise and Kevin Costner but with a more reasonable nose and a slightly nordic appearance, and you can do so after the movie was shot (or rendered!?). With a bit of luck this technology is available before Top Gun II is released...

An entirely different application is easy composites of related dna, or online shopping with clothes sampled to your own bodystyle.

Or, as is also shown, car designers can go totally wild with composites of existing designs. "Show me this but with a beamer front and ferrari back". "Now change the doors to 80s style coupé". We don't have that ease of command yet, but this is bringing such a reality much closer.

Ouch!

I foresee a future version of PhotoShop with this stuff built in:
With a crappy image open you press the AI button and then choose the genre from a drop-down list: Landscape, Street, Abstract, Minimalist,...
Then from another drop-down list you choose the desired "quality" level on a scale of 0 to 10.
Click "Go" and wait a second.
And Bob's your uncle.   :'(

Thank you, I'll stick with my pre-subscription versions of PS and LR!

Well, we already have the *real thing so why not in our imagery too?  :)

*Humans with two different sets of DNA may not be common, but they're now suspected to be less uncommon than previously thought. It turns out not all chimeras experience adverse effects and so it's likely many go undetected.

I am sure we will be able to deal with it when the time comes. In the mean time, I'll just carry on as best I can with the tools available to me.

That's interesting; I have just finished going through the entire set of House shows - and they are not exactly new. I'm sure one epìsode brings that situation into the plot.

God, it's freezing here in Mallorca at night!

With so many people now getting their DNA profiled via 23andMe or Ancestry, and others opting for full sequencing, lotsa interesting stuff is showing up in the data colleted…including chimeras exhibiting minimal or no side effects. These are most likely people who were briefly identical twin zygotes, but while still in the zygote stage they merged and then developed into a single embryo. Mother Nature likes to play with the raw ingredients!
