Don't the earrings and bindi suggest it's mother and daughter?

Thanks Eric & Gregg.

Gregg - It is not a bindi. It is a mark made with ash (from offerings to a deity). Little boys and girls are often so adorned after a visit to a temple or following morning offerings to a deity at home. Similarly, for earrings no distinction is made for little boys and girls.
