opinion - Industrial Landscape #1

Hello,
This was taken at night and already have post-production.
I would like a sincere opinion since I'm new to photography (a year back I didn't know anything about photography) and still want to lear a lot more. It's my first experiment in long exposures with tripod.

While there is nothing technically wrong with the image, there is not, for me, much visual interest, either.

If you were just taking this to see if you could do a long exposure, fine; if you were trying to make some kind of visual statement with it, I suggest that you think about what that was, and ask yourself how the framing/composition actually interacts with that.

Yes, it's just a technical experiment. I'm still working on mastering the technique before I go further on concepts.
But I fell I got to start to think about that...

Ricardo:  There are some quite lovely color passages in your photo.  And the overall treatment of the light is good.  The compositon could be tightened significantly by judicious cropping.  Understand that you have submitted an industrial picture to this, a landscape forum, site.  As such, the audience here will likely not cut you the same slack that they would if your photo contained the familiar, not to say cliched, elements that more typically characterize landscape submissions to this site.  As far as the narrative goes, if your intent is to present "beauty" out of industrial sites, all that is lacking is more "artistic" composition.  If you are not familiar with Lewis Baltz' photos in this genre, you might want to check him out.  If you narrative intent is to make social comment regarding industrial sites, that is a different issue.  If your intent is both, that could be teriffic.

The colours look a little bit dull, or even washed out. Was any post production done to the image?

Thanks Ricardo for your image. I think the colours are fine. I would personally avoid  supersaturated tonings for this image.

I agree with 'russell a' that judicous cropping is necessary. I find the dark foreground deadens the image. I have made a quick crop to remove it - and some off the right, and the image seems to 'lift' and have more presence.

This cropping I think has also created more structure - a geometrical element - and accentuated the vertical elements of the tower on the left and the light post.

By removing the dark curved concrete section on the right, only the straight edges of the light concrete remain, which helps to strengthen the narrative of some sort of industrial site.

Just a few ideas. I am interested in seeing a few more of that photographic session.

Yes, I agree, the crop really improves the image. I had done a little crop already, but I gess I'm still a bit affraid of cropping, and maybe I still have the obsession of try to show everything, less is more...
About colors, I've already done some work to them, the original was not so colorful (and was abit redish), if I improve it more it will look 'overworked'.

Ricardo:  Here is a link to some of Baltz' night shots of industrial subjects.  He has done other things as well, including B&W photos of trashed areas and the debris of suburban construction.  Early in his career he was associated with Robert Adams and Henry Wessel as one of the "New Topologists".  I find his night color work his most evocative.
