z3100 left & right margins
« on: November 19, 2018, 11:32:58 am »

Using roll paper ... I'm wondering what is the 'default' margin for the z3100 and presumably the z3200 as well. Mine has a 4mm left margin and a 6mm right margin.  I'm guessing that this isn't normal.

It's easy enough to kludge the left margin, so that it prints 5mm, but I can't get the right margin to print less than 6mm. Even using the HP Print Preview to move the print 1mm to the right doesn't work, because it just cuts off 1mm of the image and still leaves a 6mm margin.  Both the top and bottom print 5mm, which is what I suppose they're all supposed to be.

Very confusingly, this doesn't always happen.  I've wondered if there can be a problem with paper load, that could be throwing something out?  Is there an adjustment inside the machine, that can be made to rectify this?

Back when I had a working z3100, this was the one function that I could never correct.  Always printed a damn uneven left/right margin no matter what I futzed around with in settings and/or the HP printer utility.

I seem to recall that way back in 2008 when I first bought the z3100, it would print corretly, but that ability vanished on one of the early HP utility updates years ago.  I finally gave up and accepted that it was always going to print with offset margins and I would trim accordingly, or I would put a margin on the print itself and print borderless.  That would generally (but not always) seem to work.

At least my new z3200's firmware has corrected the dreaded CS6 custom photo size bug, which in the z3100 would always default to 8.5 x11 no matter what size was selected (hence, forcing me to print through CS5 only).

The margin position, left right, is when the print rolls off the printer or when the image is viewed, top up? Width of the printed image while on the printer is corresponding with the data going to the driver?

I think the default position is slightly less than 5mm at each side, measured. Qimage Ultimate reports 5mm. It is possible to add permanently some extra print margin in that program to correct for uneven borders but I guess you do the same to get 1mm extra at the 4mm print margin side and you do not like to add 2mm at that side.

It is the plain Z3100 ?  So you can not use the PS3 driver of the Postscript version. That one does something different with the print margins and if it is a software issue that driver change might show it.

Minimum margins for the Z3100 roll paper are 4.9mm. I've noticed that after doing several prints off a roll with these minimum margins it starts to "drift" so the side closest to the carriage dock gets gradually narrower, until I have to unload and reload the roll to even it out again. Maybe just getting old.
