Paper suggestion?
« on: November 15, 2018, 06:32:14 pm »

With my old 7600 I used to love matte papers like the Hahnemühle Bamboo. But it is long dead and gone.

With the P800 I have been really loving the change of look that Baryta papers are giving (when I printed in silver I was a fan of the Forte Fortezo and I am getting nicely into that neighborhood on the Red River San Gabriel...)

But there are images I'd like to find a paper that offers a softer surface but still works well with Photo ink to avoid the 6+mL of ink wasted per switch? A warm tone or at least no OBA would be a bonus...

TIA

Have you looked into the Red River Palo Duro?

If you are referring to Palo Duro Softgloss, I reviewed it on this website: https://luminous-landscape.com/red-river-palo-duro-softgloss-palo-duro-etching-san-gabriel-baryta-paper-review/. Nice paper.

Guido, you may also wish to try Epson Legacy Platine, which has no OBAs and uses PK ink. It's a bit softer than the similar Baryta papers.

Mark, Howard -- Thanks for your thoughts, they sound like good choices to try!

Mark,

The Palo Duro Softgloss seems very similar to 'regular' Platine type papers.  Have you (or anyone here) tried/tested/compared it to Canson Platine or the Epson (and whether the Legacy moniker does much other than add $$ to the cost)

Howard,

I have reviewed all four of the Legacy papers on the market at the time the reviews were done, as well as RR Palo Duro Softgloss. I did RR and Epson in separate articles at different times, so no, I have not done direct comparison of these specific products in one article, but one could look back and forth for any information that may have value as comparators.

Mark,

It might make a good article for LULA to do a “similar papers and their properties and performance,” piece.  With emphasis on your subjective evaluation of what you see and what you like / don’t like about each of the papers in the various categories.  I appreciate the thorough technical evaluation of various papers, and it would also be good to have more of your subjective sense of them.  Obviously it would be “one person’s opinion,” but an educated and respected opinion.

Thanks for that Rand. Kevin and I have been discussing various ways of migrating individual paper reviews to the next stage of making paper information and assessments more comprehensive and handy. The two main issues, apart from designing how to do it, are time and resources. Anything one does draws extensively on both and all this stuff is voluntary, done as we can manage it. Let's see what happens going forward, but just to say that something along the lines of what you are suggesting is being thought about.

I have purchased and use the Palo Duro Softgloss, Epson Legacy Platine, and Canson Platine papers.  As far as I can tell the papers are interchangeable.  Any difference between them is less than my ability to see that difference.  But I don't have the equipment to measure them to confirm my assumption that they are effectively the same.  I don't know if Ernst has tested all of these papers and I haven't looked but his database would probably show any significant differences:

I have provided a considerable amount of data (but not the spectrum data Ernst measures) for both Epson Legacy Platine and Palo Duro Softgloss in my reviews of these papers on this website. I have not reviewed Canson Platine.
