It represents one of the reasons why later generations in some lands refused to answer the draft, and in Britain it was finally abandoned, allowing me to quit engineering and follow my dream. You could have been shot in Cyprus by a Greek or a Turk, impaled on a spear or by arrow in Kenya, shot by a civilian in Northern Ireland or even had your throat cut in Rhodesia; and those the ones, the mini-wars I remember.

And for what? A few years later we all seek trade with 'em and Empire is not even memory. At least my brood grew up with their Dad still around. Many did not have that chance, fathers sacrificed for absolutely zero.

Multiculturalism is about as complex and cluttered as the scene.  (Slobo, that's a compliment of how well you caught that point.)  It creates walls between peoples just like the pictured wall rather than lessening conflicts.

As I remember Cyprus, multi-culturism wasn't the problem: two conflicting cultures created it.

As ever, the basic difficulty stemmed from the outside interference of the "motherlands", as it were, sowing crappy dreams of taking over the entire island within the embrace of one of them.

Left to themselves, the Cypriots had a beautiful island that I worked on several times; it could have been the class leader in terms of Mediterranean tourism. From skiing to swimming in a single day...
