Nikon 14-24 AFS Lens Flare
« on: October 31, 2018, 06:14:18 pm »

Hi More experienced shooters!

Does anyone have any experience with the nikon 20mm f/1.8 or the impressive 24mm f/1.4 AFS? I had some ugly flare in a sunset I shot yesterday and am pretty aggravated.
Here were my settings: D850 ISO100, f/14 1/160s Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 @ 14mm
Alternately do you have a technique you could recommend to reduce it?

One weak point of the 14-24 is the flare when large overexposed parts are into the frame..

you could hold your hand in front of the lens to cover that part and make two photos ; one with and one without your hand and mix the two.

the 24mm 1.4 nikkor is less good in my opininion than the newer 1.8 24mm
it is better built but i like the 1.8 lens better. ( and flares less than the 14-24)
have no experience with the 20mm.

14-24 flares always in the opposite corner of the flare source. As noted it’s destructive and tends to be a rainbow inverse curve.   Only solution I know of is the hand approach. Blocking flare with a hand or similar object for at least a part of the series which removes it 100 percent but requires more work in post.

Actual flare is most times hard to clone out depending on what part of the image is effected.

I don't think you can find a 14 mm lens that doesn't flare if you shoot into the sun.

Ben

Thanks I will have to look into this.. I was considering the 24 1.4 because I also shoot astrophotography and that one is rumored to be a great choice.. I don't like the $2K price tag however.
I forgot I had a Rokinon 24 1.4 I may give that one a try as well tonight.

Great point Ben.. am going to try to do a multi shot mask.
I think that not all flares are alike.

Shooting into the Sun with this lens will usually produce glorious flare. Less expected is the flare with the Sun to your side or even slightly behind you.
Opticallimits.com demonstrates this very well and shows it coming from the deep notches in the lens shade.
I put a piece of tape around the lens shade to cover the low spots by about ¼” and it works quite well.

Agreed about the 24mm f1.8, great lens! The 20mm f1.8 is great too.

Cheers,
Bernard

I have a friend in Yosemite who sells his work and uses the Rokinon.

Have the Nikkor 14-24 and the Panasonic 7-14. The latter has less issues other than the purple ghosting in certain situations. I haven't used either of the new fixed 20mm or 24mm lenses but that 20mm looks pretty nice! My old 20/3.5 AI-S was known for its pretty good behavior in its day and I'll guess the same for the two, new 1.8 wides.

In any case, the 14-24 flares and ghosts like mad, even with the sun behind but not quite as bad with a carefully-placed sun in the frame. I simply use my hand or my hat in those situations.

Another vote for the Nikon 20mm 1.8. Also I have had good results with the Zeiss Milvus 15mm and Nikon 19mm.

Thanks Paul,
I will find a copy of the 20mm 1.8 to try.
Ideally I could dual purpose it for Astro. Do you know if the 20mm has a descent DOF wide open?
