custom media on Canon IPF PRO-1000
« on: October 30, 2018, 05:09:53 pm »

Hello,

I have a new Canon IPF pro-1000. With help of the media configuration tool, I created a few custom medias like Canson Baryta photographique. I uploaded these media to my printer, which was done without any problems. But, the custom medias don't appear in the paper settings of the main menu. When I enter deep into the menus to the extended paper menu, I can see my paper.
With a second notebook, I can download in the printer the custom paper definitions from the printer, so they are in the printer.

As far as I understand the logic of Canon, I will have to set the same paper at the main menu of the printer as the one I use in the printer driver for printing. But, if the paper doesn't appear in the menu, I cannot set it.

The firmware of the printer is the latest one ( 2.07), my OS is Mac OSx 10.14 ( same problem occurs on Windows 10 of a friend's PC and printer with same F/W)
Does anyone have an idea what I could do wrong ? I contacted the service for this printer, but the guy at the phone couldn't help me. He proposed a recall, which I'm waiting for since one week....

Best regards Robert

Do you have this document: "MediaConfigurationTool_V1.1_Mac_EN_V01?  It's a 91 page manual on the MCT. It is likely to have information on the exact sequence of steps needed to make sure all this works. I don't remember off-hand therequired sequence of steps for your particular task as it's been quite a while since I visited that function, but I'm mentioning the existence of this detailed manual on it just in case you didn't know it's available.

After you create the custom media type you download it to the printer, as you did. After that you have to update the printer driver in the computer. You do so as this:
Printing Preferences --> Maintenance (Tab) --> Update Media Information (Button).

Custom media paper types that are using the manual feed tray don't appear in the printer lcd/menu. They are there but you cannot see them.

For printing you don't have to set the media type in the printer lcd/menu.  ONLY at the computer in the printer driver.

Thank you for this hint ! This seems to be the reason !

But, there is another point I don't understand ! When I look at the informatioon provided by most of the papermanufacturer like Canson, they provide the information that their paper should be printed with the paper setting for Canon Photo Paper pro lusteer ( i.e. in case of Canson Baryta photographique ). When I add this to my printer as a custom paper, there is no luster to be chosen as an option, but generic nammes for any paper of this kind like heavy photopaper. So, my question is, where do I get the translation or assosiation for this ?
Many thanks in advance ! Robert

When you create a custom media type you are not allowed to choose Pro Luster as a base media type. So you have three options if you want to print on Canson Baryta Photographic:
1. You use the Pro Luster setting and the Canson provided icc profile.
2. You use the Pro Luster setting and your custom icc profile which is created with the Pro Luster setting.
3. You create and use a custom media type based on Lightweight Photo Paper A and a custom icc profile created with this custom media type.

In any case if your are going to use the Canson icc profile use the Pro Luster setting and no other media type custom or stock.

My advice is as a start to forget about the custom media types and use the Pro Luster with the Canson provided profile.

Thank you for all these very helpful information ! I wonder why Canon does not present these kind of information in a pdf, so it would be available for everybody starting to use these printer.

Just for me to understand, what is the difference between the generic paper type with the A in their names like lightweight A and heavyweight A ?

Best regards Robert

Lightweight can be fed from the top and the manual feed. Heavyweight only from the manual feed.

For the A variants:
