Hasselblad X1D and XCD 45mm or 35-90 or 35-65 ?
« on: October 20, 2018, 10:28:35 pm »

Hi all.
I have the X1D and it is great but I need to get an XCD lens to use the full potential.
Currently I am using a Canon 24TSE with Kipon adaptor for landscapes and an HC 80 and HC 120 in the studio.
I want to get a walk around lens around 50mm that I can use with flash in the studio for full length shots.

I am looking at the XCD45 but wondering what an HCD 35-90 would be like, as I enjoyed using the 50-110 on the H series.
I could then sell the HC80. I would keep the HC 120 for macro/product.

I know that there is a 35-65 in the pipeline but I think that will be too short and a 2X zoom is not really much of a zoom.

Is anyone using the HCD35-90 on the X1D? Does it auto focus and does is it have a good feel on the camera?

I can only comment on the range and on the GFX I do like my 32-64 lens. I expect the Hasso version to be as sharp as the primes. (As is the Fuji)

I prefer to use longer focal lengths (120 and 250), but in the normal range the zoom is great.

I wouldn’t exactly call the 35-90mm a walk-around lens (it’s very large and heavy) but YMMV of course.  The 35-90mm was my go-to when I had the H4D-40. I sold it when I went to the X-system but I’ve thought about getting another as I loved that lens.

There are some reports of X1D/35-90mm users over at hasselbladdigitalforum.com. “Good feel” is subjective but it works as it should based on those reports.  You’ll want a tripod collar for the adapter due to the weight. I believe AF is now supported with the XH adapter and the 35-90 (id check with Hasselblad support though), but as with the HC lenses, only the newer 35-90mm lenses will autofocus (they need a certain firmware version - I forget which one).  One plus of the 35-90 is that it is available now, and I’ve seen older lenses pretty cheap (<$3k USD used).

Also, not that it matters a whole lot but FYI the upcoming XCD lens is a 35-75 not 35-65.

Thanks for the information. An XCD 35-75 is better but maybe still a bit short for portraits.

I will be very happy if the XCD 35-75mm zoom is as good as the Fuji 32-64mm zoom. Easily the best zoom I have ever used.
My recollection is that the HC 35-90 is better at the wide end. I would expect the XCD 90mm lens to significantly outperform it. The XCD 90mm lens is excellent. The XCD 120mm Macro is an amazingly sharp lens, but I would check out the AF. I only used it on a tripod in MF.

After reading some reports and looking at the specs, in particular size and weight, I think the way forward is clear.
I need to get the XCD 45 and then eventually the XCD 90. The HC zooms are about a Kg heavier and 50mm or more longer plus the XH adaptor length.
I will continue using the Canon TSE24 for landscape work and the HC 120 for macro and small product. The HC 120 has the advantage of having extension rings.
The HC 80 I will use for portraits until I get the XCD 90 (or 80).

Thanks for the comments.
