Both quintessential Iceland, IMHO.

Let me check my Icelandic 101 memory: "Vatnsdalur" translates to something like "Valley of Waters," doesn't it?

I like the first best for the large panel of tones and shades of colors.

Nicely framed.

Thank you, Eric and Thierry.

Eric, you’re close.  Vatn means water but it also means a lake. I checked with Börkur and he says Vatnsdalur refers to “Valley of the lake” (singular). For “lakes” it would be Vatnadalur.

Thanks for the correction, Rajan. My (minimal) Icelandic is kind of rusty. When we made our trip to Iceland in 1974, we had along a pocket phrase book which tried to include phrases for every situation the tourist might encounter.

Fully a quarter of the book was devoted to such questions as "How do I get to the Railroad Station?" or "What time does the next train depart?" and the like. Given the number of trains in Iceland, it wasn't very useful.   ;)

Thank you Rajan for these and the many images of Iceland you have shared. The earth and our place in it, from your images makes me feel very miniscule, and very appreciative
of the shear isolation and drama of places I've not personally experienced.

Thank you, Leszek. Yes, indeed, Iceland and other sub-Arctic/Arctic regions are very special.
