Problem installing icc profiles for HP z3200 on my Mac
« on: October 17, 2018, 09:17:09 am »

I downloaded a half dozen paper profiles from Canson's site and tried to install them in Lightroom for my new HP z3200.
Using the same prochedure I use with my Epson printer profiles. Library,Colorsync,Profiles.
Of course it does not work. Shows an EXE file and when in profile folder it is a .oms file?
Sounds a little PCish to me.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Mac 10.13.6

Not sure what the story might be w/ the .exe (which is as you noted, very PC).

I tried grabbing a random Canson profile (also on Mac but there is/was no choice)....

[howardmqc-mac:~/Downloads] howardm% unzip -l hp_z3200_152603.zip
Archive:  hp_z3200_152603.zip
  Length      Date    Time    Name
---------  ---------- -----   ----
  3268789  10-02-2015 10:40   icc/cifa_z3200_aqua310.oms
   700402  10-17-2018 15:26   hp_z3200_152603.pdf
---------                     -------
  3969191                     2 files

So what is the .oms file?  From http://www.canson-infinity.com/en/icc-profiles

What is a "paper preset"?

A paper preset is an installable package that extends the default selection of papers pre-installed on your HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer.
It contains all the necessary settings and parameters to work with optimal image quality, productivity, and reliability with your added media.
The paper presets include the ICC profile and many additional settings related to the printer-ink-paper interaction, like: total ink volume, gloss enhancer volume, star wheels position, media name, etc…

Downloading and installing the preset

Download the oms file bearing the name of the printing material you wish to use. You will find thereafter installation instruction for OS X and Windows operating systems. After the installation, a new entry will be found for your paper preset on the printer’s front panel.

    Steps for Macintosh users:

1. Open the HP Printer Utility application
2. Select the option Import Paper Preset inside the HP Color Center, click on Import.

I am way ahead of myself I think.
The printer is not even here yet.
I downloaded the Raster driver in preparation for the printer arriving today.
I have no access to the HP printer utility until I have the printer hooked up.
On an Epson you can download any icc profiles without having the printer installed.
I am guessing this will all work as soon as I receive the machine.

Hey Dan -
Haven’t been able to answer your posts because we got hit really hard with hurricane Michael.  Lost our  40’ x 120’ barn and have been struggling to survive since.  Just got signal enough today to be able to be distracted with LuLa, which is a good thing.

The Z3200 takes some getting used to.  There’s a learning curve and it’s a finnicky printer to begin with.
I suggest you start with the basics and learn how to make and install a profile using the embedded photospectrometer first, then begin using other profiles.

The idea with the Utility is that you make custom profiles, by:

1: In Utility, define the paper choosing a paper preset that most matches the paper you want to use
2: Calibrate (linearize) - the Z prints out a target then reads it.
3: Create a custom profile.  The Z prints out another target, reads it, then installs it under custom profiles.  When you go to print, look for it in the list which will start with HP Designjet and the name you gave it.  It automatically installs it for you in Library, etc.

.oms files are imported or exported files, such as your canson paper files.  They get installed in “other papers”

Once you get through working with the “plain vanilla” profiles you can make with the Z. You can go on to more sophisticated or advanced profiles.  You can make 1728 patch target profiles directly in the Z, but to go beyond, you’ll need to use “secret sauce” which takes a bit of finagaling to understand and master.

Here is a good place to start learning how the Z works with color profiles:

I would offer to help more but we’re lucky to have spotty cell service and we’ve been off grid since Michael hit the coast near us at 140-150 MPH winds.

Welcome to the HP Z3200ps club - have fun, and don’t expect the printer to act like your Epsons :-)

Best,

Mark

Thank you Mark.
I was thinking about you last week.
When I saw that storm so close to Quincy I knew you were getting hit.
Just glad everyone is ok.

Appreciate your reply.
I almost did not get this because I am pretty engrained in Epsons.
I am up for the challenge but hope I get it up and running without too much trouble.

Was your woodworking equipment in the barn or another building?
If I was closer I would be over to help you.
All the best
Dan

Thanks Dan, I know you would. Just my wood - Birds’eye, Tiger, cocobolo, cherry, zebrawood, every kind of burl, just a lifetime of saved wood I can’t get to.  Barn is off its foundation and is leaning westward getting close to 45 degrees.  Too dangerous to go in after my wood.

The woodshop, and the brick studio building and house made it.

And we are fine.  Just a little worse for wear.

Still something you do not want to get hit. Hope the collected wood did not get wet either.  I had to check for the Cocobolo, diifers a bit of Palisander/Rosewood I see, always fascinated by exotic wood names.

You are a bit ahead Dan. The profiles etc are stored in the printer so any system hooked up can synchronize to the data stored on its harddisc. When the .OMS file is used for the install to the printer the profile is also installed to the system you do the installation from.

Mark:
Glad you survived with minimal loss. Next time I guess you fasten the barn down better? Hope you can bring in a crane or someway get the barn back on it's foundation without spending an arm and a leg?  Hope you didn't have any of those Z3200 sitting in the barn? ;-)

Wish you good fortune on getting everything back to working order. Sounds like you have lots of fun ahead of you.

Hurricane Michael was the third most intense storm in the history of the United States. The eye went right over us.  Winds of 150 MPH would be enough to knock just about any tobacco barn built in the thirties over.
Thanks for your well wishes John -
