One would hope these instruments are easy to manufacture in a consistent manner.
The hint I was given is that they are not easy to manufacture in a consistent enough manner to achieve desired accuracy :-)
i.e. a great deal of effort needs to go towards the manufacturing process, not just the basic design of such an instrument.
That perhaps, is the difference between an instrument that is within 3-6 dE on average, and one that aspires to 1 dE accuracy.

Sorry, but I have no better idea than you do. Any insights I have are primarily from examining the instruments, and understanding how the hardware works.

The next area to examine is unit to unit consistency and that’s more difficult depending on the number of samples one has access to. One would hope these instruments are easy to manufacture in a consistent manner.

7 units from 2011-2017, on NEC PA322UHD variation was well below 1.5∆E - it seems they're consistent and aging resistant.

Some asshole was spreading a gossip among the internet, that iD3 is inaccurate after 2-3 years (which is physically impossible unless you use it as a hammer). I gathered sensors from all my fellow photographers to proove it’s total bullshit.

I tested two samples of Spyder 5 using spectroradiometr of my friend Maciej Koper - he had published the results on his forum about TV calibration:

The biggest assholes, unfortunately, are managing Xrite. They will not stand behind their products they deem to be "consumer". This includes the i1 Display Pro (it's "Pro" apparently only for a year) and the i1 Studio spectro. They simply refuse to repair them out of warranty, even at a cost. They also will not provide the user with easy to replace parts. Take this from a guy that had to junk a i1 DP slightly out of warranty that had been treated as well as humanly possible because of a short in the USB cable. So, there's that to think about.
